North America

North America has traditionally been the stronghold for baseball, as the top professional leagues, the National League and American League, are located in the USA and Canada. The Mexican League has at times been the strongest competition for those two, especially in the 1940s, when numerous African-American and Cuban Hall of Famers played there. While it is not part of the continental North America, Cuba has been an international baseball power with a baseball heritage going back to the 19th Century. In addition to its professional baseball forte, North America is known for its strong college baseball tradition, with many European or Latin American players coming to universities and other post-secondary institutions in the U.S. in order to further their development as players. Asia is the only continent with a similarly competitive college baseball system.
