Biographical Information

Mike Brosseau was born in Munster, IN, and, through 2019, is the only major leaguer born there. He attended Oakland University in Michigan, a school that Don Kirkwood attended many years earlier. He was not drafted by any team in the 2016 draft, but signed with the Tampa Bay Rays organization. Mike showed a broad-based ability during his years in the minors prior to coming up. Overall, from 2016 to 2019, he hit .297, drew ample walks (with an OBP of .377), and usually had moderate power with a high of 16 home runs in 73 minor league games in 2019. He played mostly third and second base but appeared at all positions in the minors except for center field and right field. He came up to the big club in June 2019.

He was more-or-less a two-way player during his rookie year with the Rays in 2019. Appearing in 50 games, he slashed .273/.319/.462 and appeared 3 times on the mound (with an ERA of 4.50), 26 time at second base, 18 times at third base, 11 in the outfield, once at designated hitter and once at first base. All three of his mound appearances were in blow-out losses, not competitive games, as opposed to teammate Brendan McKay, a true two-way player. He also played in the Wild Card Game against the Oakland Athletics. He was hitting well in spring training of 2020 when COVID-19 brought the world to a screeching halt.
