Biographical Information

Mariano Quiñones was a star pitcher in the Puerto Rican amateur league "Beisbol Doble A". He pitched in that loop from 1973-1998 and set records for career wins (160) and strikeouts (1,616). He pitched for the Puerto Rican national team many times. He helped Puerto Rico win a Bronze Medal in the 1979 Pan American Games. He also was in the 1979 Intercontinental Cup. He tied Lázaro de la Torre, Braudilio Vinent and an O. Torres for the most wins in the 1982 Central American and Caribbean Games (2); the rest of the team was 0-4. He pitched in the 1983 Pan American Games. In the 1984 Amateur World Series, he had a 2-0, 2.48 record. He tied for 9th in the Series in wins.

Quiñones pitched for Puerto Rico in the 1986 Amateur World Series and when they won Bronze in the 1987 Pan American Games. In the 1988 Baseball World Cup, he was 0-1 with a save and a 6.75 ERA, the highest on the Puerto Rican staff. He remained with Puerto Rico for the 1988 Olympics (Puerto Rico finished 3rd, but Olympics was not yet a Medal sport) and 1989 Intercontinental Cup (a Bronze Medal). In the 1990 Baseball World Cup, he was 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA and 14 hits (3 home runs) in 7 innings; the rest of the Puerto Rican staff was a combined 7-1 and the next-highest ERA was Wilfredo Velez's 3.65. His loss was big as it came in the Bronze Medal game; started against South Korea, he took the 7-4 loss, giving up 5 runs in 2 2/3 IP, including homers to Ki-tae Kim and Kwang-ho Jang.
