Biographical Information

Maddy English was a speedy three-time all-star third baseman in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. She played eight seasons in the league from 1943 to 1950. She played her entire career for the Racine Belles, winning three pennants and two championships.

During her career, English smacked 516 hits - 79 for extra bases - and 13 home runs. She also had 209 runs batted in and scored 357 runs of her own. While never a high average hitter in the pitching-dominated AAGPBL, English was threat on the base paths, stealing 439 bases in her career. In the final five years of her career she was named to three postseason all-star teams, including the league's inaugural one.

After her retirement from baseball, English went to Boston University and embarked on a career in education. She taught physical education and was a guidance counselor for 27 years at Parlin Junior High School in Everett, Massachusetts.

In 1997, she was inducted into the BU Athletics Hall of Fame. She is also a member of the Women in Sports Hall of Fame and the New England Sports Museum Hall of Fame. In 2003, the town of Everett dedicated the Madeline English School, a pre-kindergarten to eighth grade school.
