Biographical Information[edit]
Fred Walter has played for the French national team and in French Division I.
Walter debuted in Division I in 2014 with the Barracudas de Montpellier; the 16-year-old was 5 for 19 with two runs, a RBI and a hit-by-pitch while fielding .977. [1] He attended the MLB European Elite Camp in 2014-2015. [2] In '15, he batted .255/.300/.255 and fielded .976. [3] He played for France in the 2015 European Junior Championship, producing at a .364/.481/.682 clip with 8 RBI in 5 games. He was 7th in slugging, tied for 6th in RBI, tied for 2nd in homers (2) and tied for 6th with 15 total bases. [4]
He made the cut for the French squad at the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers even though he was just 17. He was overmatched against the more experienced players, going 0 for 8 (France's lightest-hitting regular) and with a crucial dropped pop-up in foul territory that helped blow a surprising lead over Panama. [5] He hit .190/.292/.381 in the 2016 European Junior Championship, fielding .938. [6] In 2016, he had a big season for Montpellier. He hit .372/.473/.489 with 28 runs in 25 games. He was 5th in the league in average (between Hasely Medina and Will Musson), 10th in slugging and 2nd in OBP (.004 behind Eddie Murray). [7]
During 2017, he hit .254/.288/.317 for the Barracudas. [8] He came to the US for college ball and was 1 for 16 for Seminole State College. [9] He saw limited action for Montpellier in 2018 due to his time in the US (4 for 21, 3 BB, 8 R). [10] His second season at Seminole State, he improved to .333/.375/.571 in a backup role. [11]
