Biographical Information[edit]

On July 12, 1997, pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Francisco Córdova pitched 9 hitless and scoreless innings in a game against the Houston Astros. Naturally, the Pirates failed to score any runs for him and he was removed from the game. Ricardo Rincon pitched a hitless 10th inning and pinch-hitter Mark Smith ended the game with a three-run homer off John Hudek with two outs in the bottom of the 10th. The game marks the only time in major league history when two pitchers combined on a no-hitter that went into extra innings. Additionally, it remains the last no-hitter tossed by the Pirates.

Córdova packed some pretty solid work into five seasons in The Show. He saved 12 games as a rookie in 1996 and spun four shutouts over the next two seasons, combining for a 24-22, 3.45 record with 11 and 13 wins in successive years. His arm gave out on him over the next two years, making his final appearance at 28. He remained active in the Mexican League for a long time thereafter, though, working until 2011. Primarily wearing a very high uniform number, 67, in the bigs, he played for Mexico when they won Bronze in the 2003 Pan American Games.
