Efrain Nieves Sr. played in the Olympics and is the father of Efrain Nieves.
Nieves backed up Jose Lorenzana at catcher in the 1990 Baseball World Cup, going 5 for 11 with 3 walks, a double, 2 runs and 3 RBI for Puerto Rico; he easily outhit Lorenzana. He was with Puerto Rico in the 1990 Goodwill Games and when they won Silver at the 1991 Pan American Games. In the 1992 Olympics, Efrain hit only .176/.300/.176, replacing Lorenzana at starter; he allowed 5 steals in 6 tries. He was one of Puerto Rico's lighter hitters in the Barcelona Summer Games.
He helped Puerto Rico win a Bronze in the 1993 Central American and Caribbean Games. During the 1994 Baseball World Cup, Nieves was 1 for 6 with two walks while backing up Lorenzana. He played for the Puerto Rican team that won the Bronze at the 1995 Pan American Games and Gold in the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games, their second Gold ever in a Central American and Caribbean Games.
