Biographical Information[edit]

David Williams played right field at Rutgers University and was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 15th round of the 2007 amateur draft. He showed a tremendous ability to hit for average in college while also displaying moderate power.

The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Williams in 2005, and he was selected again in 2006 by the Florida Marlins; he passed up both opportunities in order to complete his college career.

The Scarlet Knights offered little playing time for Williams in his first two seasons, but he became a starter in 2005. Williams hit .224 as a freshman in 2004. In his first year as a starter, he hit .312 and drove in 32 runs, and smacked 6 home runs. He was forced to miss some time with a shoulder injury. The big righty missed the majority of the 2006 season with injuries, but was able to hit .314 in 15 games.

2007 was Williams's best season at Rutgers. He placed first on the team with a .412 batting average, a .494 OBP and slugged .561. He walked 31 times compared to just 22 strikeouts, finished second in doubles (19) and third in RBI's (52). He led all of the team's outfielders with 7 assists.

After signing with the Yankees, Williams was sent to Staten Island, where he hit .349 in his first month.
