Biographical Information[edit]
Charlie "Chip" Marshall appeared in one major league game for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1941, in the same year that Stan Musial made his debut for the same team. Chip also played 13 years in the minors, primarily as a catcher. He missed the 1943-1945 seasons serving in the military during World War II.
Chip's one major league game was against the Brooklyn Dodgers, who went on to win the National League pennant. He was a pinch-runner and caught the 9th inning, but did not get a plate appearance. Like Moonlight Graham, Chip has achieved a measure of fame for his making the majors but not getting an at-bat.
He has been inducted into the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame, which says that after his pro days he played semi-pro ball for eight years and then coached youth baseball for 18 years. [1]
