Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Alex Zych played eight seasons in the minors and led his league in wins once and losses once.

He debuted in 1944 with the Wellsville Yankees (.329 in 25 G) and Kansas City Blues (0 for 2), playing regularly in the outfield. In 1945, he pitched for the Norfolk Tars (0-2, 16 R in 4 IP) and Hagerstown Owls (7-5, 5.09, 88 BB in 92 IP; he also hit .262). After not pitching in 1946, he had a 7-9, 4.60 record for the '47 Independence Yankees, walking 125 in 139 innings. He was 7th in the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri League in walks.

In 1948, the right-hander was 10-10 with a 3.30 ERA for the Greenville Bucks; he also batted .246. He fell to 10-16, 5.13 for the 1949 Sumter Chicks. He lost the most games in the Tri-State League, was second in earned runs allowed (109) and ranked 5th with 114 walks. He split 1950 between the Raleigh Cardinals (1-9, 4.24, 71 BB in 102 IP) and Kinston Eagles (10-3, 3.72, 70 BB in 104 IP).

He won 22 games for Kinston in 1951 to lead the Coastal Plain League. He lost 9, had a 2.64 ERA and walked 114 in 232 innings. He made the league's top 10 in ERA. He split 1952 between two Tri-State League clubs, with a combined record of 5-13, 4.83 and 95 walks in 149 innings. He wrapped up his career in 1953, going 3-3 for the Statesville Blues to finish with a cumulative record of 75-79.

He later served as the equipment manager for the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Athletics.
