Biographical Information[edit]
Alain Hernández was a right-handed pitcher for Villa Clara of the Cuban National Series before defecting to Costa Rica in the late summer of 1998 with Villa Clara teammates Angel Lopez, Jorge Diaz, Osmani Garcia, and Maikel Jova. Unlike the other four, Hernández did not have a professional baseball career in the United States. In Cuba, he had gone 25-11 with a save and 3.90 ERA in 79 games (34 starts) over six seasons. He struck out 148 and walked 133 in 343 2/3 innings, while surrendering 333 hits.
