All-Star IBB Issued
Posted by Steve Lombardi on July 12, 2010
Using Play Index, I was surprised to see that there have been 25 intentional walks issued in All-Star Games.
At first blush, I thought "You have to be a great hitter to get an IBB in a game that's an exhibition and where you have an All-Star batter coming up behind you..." But, then I remembered that pitchers used to hit in this game and that there's always the situation where you're walking someone to set up a force play.
In any event, it's a fun list to look at - and note the scores, innings, and runners on and outs situations for each of the 25 IBB issues in All-Star play to date. Which one strikes your fancy and why?

The 1983 walking of Rod Carew seems odd since it was only the second inning. I could see an intentional walk late in the game but not when it's 1-1 in the second inning.

I wonder if any of the guys walked or any of the pitchers issuing the walk had that as their only game action. That would suck.

The last four have come during the era in which the winning team gets the World Series home field advantage. So, there was probably some game strategy at work there. All four, in fact, have come in the past two years, including three in 2008. Before that, the last one was in 1991.

Three of them in the 1979 game, and three in 2008. The one to Tim Wallach in 1985, with a 5-run lead with two out in the 9th, seems a little odd.

Gerry - They AL was down 5 and trying to prevent further damage. Runners on 2nd and 3rd Tim Wallach or Glenn Wilson? Who do you want to face?

Out of 25 IBB, only one came with a runner on first, Cook to Carlos Guillen in 2008.

Raphy, my mistake, I misread it as the AL up by 5. But didn't the NL have anyone better than Glenn Wilson available? Gary Carter, for instance?
