Leave Them Alone and They May Come Home

Posted by Raphy on October 25, 2009

Mike Scioscia's decision to intentionally walk Alex Rodriguez with the bases empty has worked out well so far. However, it is interesting to note that historically this has been a pretty risky proposition. Prior to this year, a post-season bases-empty intentional-walk was successful in preventing a run in only four of the seven times it was tried. Including Arod's walks, there have now been 9 bases empty post-season IBB. Here they are with their results:

So Tommy Lasorda was the first manager to do it after 70+ years of post season games...and then no one tried it again for another 24 years. Lasorda is one of my favorite managers ever. Leading the US team to the 2000 Gold was an incredible accomplishment overlooked by many.

I wondered if intentional walks were recorded in the postseason play-by-play since they were not an official stat until 1954(?), but it appears that they were.
