Roy Halladay has 7 first-half complete games

Posted by Andy on July 6, 2010

Yesterday Roy Halladay threw a complete game in the Phillies' 81st contest of the year becoming the first guy in a while to reach 7 CG's in his team's first half.

Here are the other guys to do it in the last 20 years:

At a glance, only Schilling, Martinez and Brown put up comparable numbers in the 2nd half of their respective seasons. Johnson's season ended on the DL by mid-August; Hentgen added 2 CG / 0 SHO; Glavine had only two 2nd half starts of >7 IP. I would guess Halladay's 2nd half will be big.

  2. DavidRF Says:

Johnson didn't go on the DL. That was the strike.

  3. Andy Says:

Do I recall correctly that RJ threw the last pitch of the season that year?

    @3
Sounds right. It was the only late game on the west coast that day and RJ throw a complete game (15K, GSc-89)

He had skipped his previous start, so I don't know what his rest-of-the-season health prospects were, but that night he was great.

  5. Richard Says:

Wow, Schilling then had 8 more in the second half

  6. JDV Says:

    Oh...yeah...the strike...Oops.

  7. Malcolm Says:

I believe Halladay is on pace for 278 IP this year... I wonder how many pitchers have thrown that many innings in the last 20 years or so. I'm sure a few have, but probably not very many...

  8. Jim Says:

I dont think anyone has Malcom. I know the last to pitch over 300 was carlton either in or around '82. It would be great if Halladay could do it.

  9. Andy Says:

Carlton in 1980 was last guy to throw 300.

  10. Andy Says:

The last guy to top 270 IP was Randy Johnson in 1999 and 1991. The last guy to top 275 was Dave Stewart in 1988. The last guys to top 280 were Charlie Hough and Roger Clemens in 1987. The last guy to top 290 was Bert Blyleven in 1985.

Of course these numbers do not include post-season innings pitched as well.

  11. Malcolm Says:

Yea I just checked it out. Carlton threw 285 in 1983, which was the last time anyone in the NL threw that many innings. Dave Stewart threw 281 in 1987, which was the last time anyone in the AL threw more than 278.

  12. Andy Says:

For example Curt Schilling pitched 305 innings in 2001, regular season and postseason combined.
