Consecutive Games Allowing 1 Run or Less
Posted by Raphy on June 23, 2010
Last night the Mariners beat the Cubs 2-0. This was the fifth consecutive game in which the Mariners allowed 1 run or less. (H/T Craig Calcaterra whose article made me aware of this fact.)

The Mariners' streak is the longest of the season and in fact is the longest since the Cardinals last May. It should be noted that this is the Mariners' second streak of at least 3 games and that the Mets have already put together 3 separate streaks of 3 games this season. Here are this season's longest streaks

The current PI era (1920-1939,1952-2010) record is held by the 1966 KC A's. However with a gem tonight the M's can join a select list of teams to have extended their streak to 6. Here are the leaders.

Cliff Lee takes on the Cubs tonight.

I remember the Orioles five consecutive CG SHOs, including two double-header sweeps. That was not Baltimore's strongest team -- Palmer was injured much of the season -- but this streak launched a huge September comeback to win the East Division again. The O's had another streak of five SHO to end a disappointing '95 season, but only four of those were CGs.

Wow, and of those 6 games in the Orioles streak, they won three of them 1-0 and one 2-0.

From here in Pittsburgh, nice as always to see two separate sweeps of the Pirates contributing to this year's list.

@ 3
At least your Pirates weren't the victims of a perfect sweep like their eastern rivals.
June 23rd, 2010 at 3:04 pm
@4 Somehow I don't think the Phillies are going to win a pity contest against the Pirates.
June 23rd, 2010 at 8:28 pm
The 1903 Pirates threw 6 straight shutouts, 2-8 June.

I'm surprised the Braves of the 90's didn't make the list with the pitching staff they had. And I know 1967 was a pitchers year, but the Senators? Camilo Pascaul had an ERA + below league average and Joe Coleman was a rookie with an ERA of 4.63 (in a pitchers park too). The rest of the staff was Phil Ortega, Barry Moore & Frank Bertaina. I understand the Orioles & 65 Dodgers doing it. The 78 Yankees had Guidry & Hunter plus Figueroa won 20 that year. The 88 Mets had Gooden, Darling, Cone, Ojeda & Fernandez. Even the 95 Marlins had Kevin Brown & Al Leiter.

I see Cliff Lee extended the streak to 6 tonight!
Good luck to Seattle in eclipsing an entirely unexpected record for the A's. Amazing to see KC's 8-game streak had 3 extra-inning games, including a 15-inning win over Cleveland...

Lee was really clutch when it counted.
He got out of a runners on second and third, no-outs, situation in the top of the seventh. Colvin hit a short fly to left, Castro struck out, and Theriot grounded out.
I'm looking for Felix to make it seven straight Thursday.
They go to Milwaukee for a weekend series next.
