Consecutive Games Without Allowing 4 Runs

Posted by Raphy on May 18, 2010

Last night  Jonathan Papelbon imploded , allowing 4 runs in the 9th to the Yankees. Amazingly, it was the first time in his career that Paplebon allowed 4 runs in a game. Papelbon's streak of 284 games with less than 4 runs allowed to start his career was the 3rd longest in baseball history. Since this is a short relief stat, I assume that the years not covered by PI will have little , if any bearing on this list.

Here are the leaders:

The longest streak at any point in a career belongs to Dan Plesac who ran off 446 games from 1997-2003. However, those 446 games only included 290.2 innings. Papelbon's streak ranks 22nd overall with a handful of active streaks ahead of him.

So Jenks had a similar streak broken just a week ago -- and his was two games longer than Papelbon's!

  2. Raphy Says:

Yes SJ. I should have mentioned that. Thank you.

  3. Elkboy Says:

I found the 4 active streaks directly above Papelbon on the 2nd list interesting...Franklin, Reyes, Sherrill and Marte all within 10 games of each other. That means that last week there were 6 players with active streaks of at least 280 games!

Franklin remarkably (for his skill set) hasn't allowed 4 runs since he became a full-time reliever in 2006.

  4. Mark Says:

I wonder what it is for starting pitchers? Probably during the dead ball era me thinks.

A little off-topic, but I noticed there is a glitch in the HR log of Marcus Thames (and perhaps some other players). It says he had a walk-off HR in the game below. What he actually did was hit an HR (when his team had an 8-4 lead), and then the game was called due to rain.

I noticed this because one of the announcers said that yesterday was Thames' second career walkoff HR, and then Thames later said that it was his first.

  7. rico petrocelli Says:

Does Jonathan Papelbon, have the best ERA+ in the history of America’s pastime (among pitchers with over 300 innings)?

Last night was the first time in his career that he gave up a walk-off home run

(Kudos to House that Dewey Built for the factoids)

  8. Johnny Twisto Says:

    Yes:

    Jonathan Papelbon......243
    Mariano Rivera.........203
    Billy Wagner...........183
    Francisco Rodriguez....176
    Bryan Harvey...........162

Now let us know when Pap ever throws 70 IP in a season and we can discuss him as an elite closer.

    (sorry for any formatting issues)

  9. cubbies Says:

papelbon also was 1st in both charts for ERA over that time span, so i shows that he wasnt just lucky, he really was never a good candidate for giving up 4+ runs in a game.
