Consecutive Games with a GIDP

Posted by Raphy on May 11, 2010

Wilson Valdez has quite a GIDP streak going. As Rich, a reader, mentioned in the comments of another thread, Valdez has now hit into a double play in 5 consecutive games (Tonight's Phillies game has been postponed.)  As double play records were not uniformly kept in baseball until 1939, the PI era  for researching  this streak is 1952-2010. Here are the longest streaks since 1952.

    Nomah!

  2. Kahuna Tuna Says:

Ecccch. Valdez's OPS+ as of today is -5. Maybe he should seek career advice from Sergio Santos.

  3. Jim Says:

Valdez is the backup of a back up

  4. Andy Says:

How did Sandoval manage an OPS of .920 over his streak and yet have only 2 RBI. Weird.

  5. Larry R. Says:

Look at the collective speed of this nonet! I'm surprised the number isn't higher! I believe Jim Rice has the career record for GIDP, no?

  6. Larry R. Says:

Just checked...Jim Rice with 315. But Ivan Rodriguez is at 314! A career record is about to be broken! Who knew?

  7. Larry R. Says:

Sorry...my bad. I'm new to this P.I. thing and not a subscriber. They blocked out the top 5...Rice was the first one visible to me. Someone has 350.

  8. Jeff J. Says:

There is no such thing as "blocked out top 5"

  9. Steven Sharp Says:

For the period that grounded into double play stats are available, Cal Ripken, Jr. is the all-time leader with 350. Following Ripken are Hank Aaron (328), Carl Yastrzemski (323), and Dave Winfield (319). Eddie Murray and Jim Rice are tied for fifth place with 315. Ripken passed Aaron in 2000, after Aaron had been the leader since 1970. It shows the # of GIDPs for the top 5 but nothing else...won't tell me who they are. Call it what you will, their identities are blocked out for me, a non-subscriber.

  11. Jim Says:

HA! Really great idea there Jeff J. Now that you've pointed that out I wonder if the higher ups will block that exploit.

  12. Mike Says:

    Jeff...keep it quiet man!!!

  13. Mstew Says:

Sandoval started this season with 4 consecutive days with GIDP. I guess his 5th one was in the last game last season.

  14. Kahuna Tuna Says:

Valdez went 2 for 4 with a double in yesterday's loss to the Rockies, and his OPS+ has blossomed to 20. I take back all the mean things I said about him.
