Most and fewest players getting a hit in a game in 2009

Posted by Andy on February 17, 2010

Here's a neat thing you can do with the Batting Game Finder--find the games where the most or the fewest different players got a hit in a game.

Here are the accomplishments in 2009 for performances by a single team.

Clicking through to the box score for each game yields the expected--the Padres and Orioles each won their games, and most of the teams having 11 different players get a hit also won their games.

Those are all the games in which just 1 player got a hit. As you might expect, every single one of those teams lost their games although some were very close.

Here are the most recent games in which just 1 player for a team got a hit but the team won:

Of those games, the most recent one where one player who two different run-scoring hits was the 1998 game, where Manny Ramirez hit two solo homers for his team's only hits and runs.

Although Campy wasn't the only player to get a hit in this 1966 game that the A's won, he might as well have been.

    I hope I've formatted the link correctly . . .

  2. Matt Says:

Yes you did, Tuna. I wonder how he singled and then scored on an E-1, all in the same play.

Obviously this list leaves out a, when no Rays player had a hit off Mark Buehrle.

  3. Matt Says:

OK, apparently I didn't do it right. It was 7/23/09.

  4. wboenig Says:

Here's a game in which Billy Williams got all FOUR of his team's hits, including two solo HRs:

I read somewhere that there were five occasions in Williams' career where he was the only member of his team to geet a hit in a game, and in none of those five games did he just have one hit.

  5. Djibouti Says:

I remember the top game on that third list and it was quite an odd sight. Sizemore led off the game with a double. The other 27 at-bats for the Indians failed to produce a single hit, but they scored 2 runs. Sizemore also had an RBI in the game, but not from his hit (obviously since it led off the game). So only one player got a hit, he only got one hit, and he had an RBI but not from that hit, and his team won.

Although I suppose that isn't as odd as the 8/7/90 game. In that game Paul O'Neill was 2 for 3 with a walk. The rest of the team went 0-23 with a walk. O'Neill had neither an RBI or a R. He was the only guy to get a hit in a winning effort, got two hits, and had nothing to show for it.

[...] Most and fewest players getting a hit in a game in 2009 (Baseball-Reference). No team had more players get a hit in a game in 2009 than the Padres on July 31 against Milwaukee. Seriously? [...]

  7. Larry Crowder Says:

Number 17 on the list, the 1-0 win by the Braves over the Pirates on July 25, 1992 is a vividly memorable game for Braves fans.

The one run, of this finely played contest, came courtesy of David Justice's 9th homerun of that season, to deep leftfield, with one out in the 2nd inning, off Danny Jackson(4-10 after this game.)

Braves starter Charlie Liebrandt (8-3) shut out the Pirates, on 4 hits, for 8 innings, before giving way to Alejandro Pena in the 9th.

The Pirates made the 9th inning a nervous one for the Braves, their 44,567 in the stands, and the countless numbers watching on TBS. Pena retired pinch hitter (for Gary Redus) Gary Varsho on a close bunt play 4-4 for the first out.

Lemke made a good play charging and throwing. Jay Bell then singled, to start the fireworks.

Andy Van SLyke, the next hitter, hit a long drive to left center field. Braves centerfielder Otis Nixon made one of baseball's all time best catches, seemingly rising far above the fence, from a dead sprint spearing the ball as it left the park, and brought it back.

Even Justice, who had come over applauded in admiration and awe at it's majesty. Nixon, did not celebrate too quickly, quickly relaying the ball back to the infield, remembering there was a runner on. That great catch is still a regular highlight on Braves broadcasts.

Bobby Cox removed Pena then, bringing in lefthander Kent Mercker, to face Orlando Merced. Mercker walked Merced, before retiring Barry Bonds, on a grounder to firstbase that ended the game.

One hit and one spectacular catch was all it took to beat the Pirates on that night. A classic game.
