Most Caught Steals in a Post-Season Game
Posted by Chris J. on November 10, 2007
Only thirteen times has a player been caught stealing twice in one postseason game. Before I link to the answers, care to guess:
1) Which 2 Hall of Famers are on the list (Hint: the older one was a rotten VC pick, the younger one is a concensus HoFr)?
2) Which player did it twice (Hint: Deadballer)?
3) It hasn't happened in the World Series in over a half-century. Care to guess who it was? (Hint: more than one biography has been written about him)
Last time I did this I gave too many hints, so I'll leave it at that. Here are the men caught stealing twice in one post-season game.

That Nixon game is weird. The first caught stealing appears to be a failed hit-and-run, and you can't really fault Nixon. He's not a fast player, and he was nailed when Bill Mueller struck out.
Then, Nixon got caught stealing home in the 7th inning. If memory serves, I believe he was actually picked off third by Posada. It doesn't make a lot of sense that he's be trying a straight steal of home with 2 runners on and 2 outs in a 1-run game.

That Kevin Bass game might have been the worst post-season performance of all time. Besides the two caught stealings (I believe one was also a pickoff, like Nixon), he struck out to make the last out in the game, which ended the series. He also made an error.

Never would have guessed Brooks Robinson, considering he only stole 28 bases in his entire CAREER. The game in question was Game 1 of the inaugural ALCS in 1969. Robinson was thrown out stealing 2B early in the game (probable failed hit-and-run?). Then, with 2 outs in the 9th, Robinson was apparently picked off 3B. Ouch. His teammates took him off the hook by winning in the 12th inning.
