Youngest (and oldest) post-season pitchers
Posted by Andy on October 25, 2007
Before the full post, I just wanted to mention a coupla' things:
- Please post your predictions for Game 2 of the World Series here. You do not need to have participated in Game 1 to participate in Game 2 or subsequent games.
- Sean made a few improvements to this blog that he didn't publicize, so I'll mention them. Over on the left, under the names of the writers, there is a link for suggestions. You can post a comment there if you have an idea for this blog you'd like to see posted. I strongly encourage you all to use that suggestion box. Also, you may have noticed that all the posts have categories. Sean recently added a "post-season" category so you can read all posts on that. (It doesn't retroactively apply, though, so it's up to us writers to tag our posts properly.)
Anyway, yesterday I promised you some PI knowledge on youngest pitchers in the post-season.
Here are the youngest players to start a post-season game:

When Ubaldo Jiminez takes the mound tonight, he'll be 23 years and roughly 8 months old, which would make him only about the 150th youngest starter in the post-season and about the 75th youngest to start a World Series game.
To show you just how much the PI knows, here are the youngest starters all-time for Game 2 of the World Series:

So Jiminez doesn't even crack the top 10 of that list.

I went to 28 games because those last 3 entries are all by Curt Schilling from this year, and tonight he'll make a new #26, supplanting himself from a few days ago. He's just a couple months behind Clemens, but he'll have to pitch in a subsequent post-season if he wants to make it any higher on the list.
By the way, if you look at youngest relievers in the post-season, you find a few guys who were just 19:

Wow, so Jack Quinn is both the oldest starter and the oldest reliever.
One thing that the PI cannot yet do is figure out the biggest age difference between opposing starters in a post-season game. Anybody out there know the answer to that one?

I believe I've done a thorough search by hand, and here are the results:
*Jimenez vs. Schilling. Difference: 17 years, 2 months, 8 days
*Plank vs. James (10-10-1914). Difference: 16 years, 6 months, 12 days
*L Hernandez vs. Hershiser (10-18-1997 & 10-23-1997). Difference: 16 years, 5 months, 4 days
*Quinn vs. Root (10-12-1929). Difference: 15 years, 8 months, 16 days.

Earlier this postseason, Roger Clemens (45), one of the oldest pitchers to play a postseason game, was relieved by Philip Hughes (21). I was wondering if this is the largest differential between starter and reliever in a postseason game.
October 25th, 2007 at 8:36 pm
That wasn't as difficult as I thought, considering I wanted to find a difference larger than 24 years, I did a search for starts in postseason age > 43 (which is 19 + 24). Only 9 such starts. Good.
It turns out it is the most. But David Wells was once relieved by a 22 year old, when he was 43. And Randy Johnson when he was 43 was relieved by a 23 year old.
