Homering in the only post-season plate appearance

Posted by Andy on October 30, 2007

From a user suggestion by gswitter, here is a look at players who homered in their only plate-appearance of a post-season series. For starters, the PI isn't set up to search just by post-season, but we can start by finding players who homered in their only plate appearance of any one post-season game.

Here are the last 25 guys to do it:

If you look at the "positions" column at the right, you can see that most of these guys were pinch-hitters. The full list is right here.

Gswitter pointed out that bobby Kielty had just one plate appearance in this year's World Series, and the questions was how many of these others guys also had just one PA in whichever series they homered in.

The answer is that I don't know of any way that the PI can determine this as of right now (since there is yet no way of doing post-season season searches, only game searches.) I think the only way to do it is to sort through the list manually.

I don't believe that anybody else among the 5 above had just 1 PA in their series. Anybody else care to check the full list? (linked above.)

Interestingly, the first time such an event ever happened was in 1928! Then it didn't happen again until 1952! There's another big gap between 1961 and 1975

Which of those homers do I remember most?

    Kirk Gibson. no doubt.
    JT Snow's 3-run game-tying shot! (2000-10-05) What a heartbreaker.
Aaron Boone's game seven winner (2003-10-16)
Ed Sprague's game winner in game 2 of the WS (1992-10-18)
Ledee's grand salami vs. Boston (1999-10-17)
    Leyritz's game-tier (1998-10-01)
Pag's game winner in the ALCS (1991-10-11)
Mike Lowell's game one winner (2003-10-07)
Trot Nixon's game three winner (2003-10-04)
Chili Davis' game tier in the WS (1991-10-22)

And the one I wasn't around for, but I've read about:
    Dusty Rhodes (1954-09-29)

Ah, Jim Mason. When I was little, and all the data I had came from the backs of my 1970s Topps baseball cards, I was fascinated with Jim Mason. How could a guy keep playing if he batted in the low .200s and high .100s? He was the guy I loved to hate. Nothing personal. It's just the way a nine-year old's mind works.

I was pretty upset when he hit a dinger against my beloved Reds.

From the list of the guys whose homer came in their only series at-bat, I noticed that two of them - Mason and Wilson - never had another postseason plate appearance, making them the only two guys to have a home run in their only postseason play appearance.
