Most 20 HR / 20 SB seasons
Posted by Andy on August 24, 2007
This is an easy Season Finder search, but the results surprised me. Most seasons with at least 20 HR and 20 SB since 1901:
From To Ages Seasons Link to Individual Seasons +-----------------+----+----+-----+-------+------------------------------+ Barry Bonds 1987 1998 22-33 10 Ind. Seasons Bobby Bonds 1969 1979 23-33 10 Ind. Seasons Bobby Abreu 1999 2005 25-31 7 Ind. Seasons Eric Davis 1986 1996 24-34 7 Ind. Seasons Raul Mondesi 1995 2003 24-32 6 Ind. Seasons Hank Aaron 1961 1968 27-34 6 Ind. Seasons Willie Mays 1955 1960 24-29 6 Ind. Seasons Mike Cameron 1999 2006 26-33 5 Ind. Seasons Carlos Beltran 1999 2004 22-27 5 Ind. Seasons Alex Rodriguez 1997 2005 21-29 5 Ind. Seasons Ray Lankford 1992 1998 25-31 5 Ind. Seasons Howard Johnson 1987 1991 26-30 5 Ind. Seasons Joe Carter 1986 1991 26-31 5 Ind. Seasons Darryl Strawberry 1984 1988 22-26 5 Ind. Seasons Kirk Gibson 1984 1988 27-31 5 Ind. Seasons Andre Dawson 1978 1983 23-28 5 Ind. Seasons Vada Pinson 1959 1965 20-26 5 Ind. Seasons Alfonso Soriano 2002 2006 26-30 4 Ind. Seasons Shawn Green 1998 2001 25-28 4 Ind. Seasons Sammy Sosa 1993 1997 24-28 4 Ind. Seasons Reggie Sanders 1993 2004 25-36 4 Ind. Seasons Ron Gant 1990 1995 25-30 4 Ind. Seasons Rickey Henderson 1985 1993 26-34 4 Ind. Seasons Don Baylor 1975 1979 26-30 4 Ind. Seasons Joe Morgan 1973 1977 29-33 4 Ind. Seasons Reggie Jackson 1970 1976 24-30 4 Ind. Seasons
Note that this is not necessarily consecutive such seasons. (Actually I don't think there's a way to search for that on the PI currently.)
Anyway, I was surprised to see Bonds at the top...not Barry Bonds but his dad Bobby. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Reggie Sanders on there. Has a player ever switched teams so often and yet remained so productive? I'm not suggesting that Sanders is a HOFer, but he has 305 career HR and 304 career SB while playing for 8 different teams in the last 10 years. And the "other" Reggie on this list, of the Mr. Martinez Jackson variety, also surprised me. I had forgotten that he attempted so many steals earlier in his career, although his success rate is not very good (66% for his career.)
Most 30/30 seasons is just sort of a scaled-down version of the previous list:
From To Ages Seasons Link to Individual Seasons +-----------------+----+----+-----+-------+------------------------------+ Barry Bonds 1990 1997 25-32 5 Ind. Seasons Bobby Bonds 1969 1978 23-32 5 Ind. Seasons Alfonso Soriano 2002 2006 26-30 4 Ind. Seasons Howard Johnson 1987 1991 26-30 3 Ind. Seasons Vladimir Guerrero 2001 2002 25-26 2 Ind. Seasons Bobby Abreu 2001 2004 27-30 2 Ind. Seasons Raul Mondesi 1997 1999 26-28 2 Ind. Seasons Jeff Bagwell 1997 1999 29-31 2 Ind. Seasons Sammy Sosa 1993 1995 24-26 2 Ind. Seasons Ron Gant 1990 1991 25-26 2 Ind. Seasons Willie Mays 1956 1957 25-26 2 Ind. Seasons
How about Ron Gant sneaking in there? He was never the same player after the broken leg caused him to miss the 1994 season entirely, although I had no idea if that's cause and effect.
And finally, the only 40/40 seasons on record:
From To Ages Seasons Link to Individual Seasons +-----------------+----+----+-----+-------+------------------------------+ Alfonso Soriano 2006 2006 30-30 1 Ind. Seasons Alex Rodriguez 1998 1998 22-22 1 Ind. Seasons Barry Bonds 1996 1996 31-31 1 Ind. Seasons Jose Canseco 1988 1988 23-23 1 Ind. Seasons
And finally, here are all the players so far in 2007 with at least 15 each of HR and stolen bases:
Cnt Player SB HR Year Age +----+-----------------+---+--+----+---+ 1 Hanley Ramirez 41 23 2007 23 2 Eric Byrnes 35 18 2007 31 3 Grady Sizemore 29 21 2007 24 4 David Wright 28 22 2007 24 5 Brandon Phillips 25 23 2007 26 6 Jimmy Rollins 25 22 2007 28 7 Chris Young 21 26 2007 23 8 Gary Sheffield 20 24 2007 38 9 Russell Martin 20 15 2007 24 10 Corey Hart 19 18 2007 25 11 Alfonso Soriano 18 18 2007 31 12 Carlos Beltran 17 25 2007 30 13 Alex Rodriguez 17 42 2007 31 14 Bobby Abreu 17 15 2007 33 15 Ian Kinsler 16 15 2007 25 16 Mike Cameron 15 16 2007 34
So, guys already in the 20/20 club for 2007 are Hanley Ramirez, Sizemore, Wright, Brandon Phillips, Rollins, Chris Young (that's the other Chris Young), and Gary Sheffield. Corey Hart and Alfonso Soriano have a shot to join (as do a few others.) Soriano is on the DL right now, and I notice Hart hasn't played in a few days. Nobody is a lock for 30/30 this year, but Ramirez, Wright, Rollins, and Phillips all have a shot.

The leaders also lead for 30/30.
One of those leaders also leads for 10/10 and is tied for the 40/40 lead (among other things.)

It appears this post somehow got deleted. I'll see if it can be resurrected and even if not, I'll repost it. Suffice it to say that both Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonds excelled at 20/20 and 30/30 seasons.
