Shutouts in 2009

Posted by Andy on July 13, 2009

There have been a couple of days this season with an unusually high number of shutouts occuring on the same day.

A quick look at shutouts over the last 10 years:

Year Games Link to Individual Games
+----+-----+-------------------------+
 2002 275 Ind. Games
 2008 271 Ind. Games
 2005 261 Ind. Games
 2006 260 Ind. Games
 2003 259 Ind. Games
 2004 251 Ind. Games
 2007 243 Ind. Games
 2001 227 Ind. Games
 2000 204 Ind. Games
 2009 145 Ind. Games

The 2009 figure is through yesterday, when most teams have played about 87 of their 162 games. That's a pace of 270 for the entire year, which although on the high end for the last 10 years isn't what I'd call unusually high. If the pace holds through the rest of the year, it's true that 4 of the last 5 seasons will fall in the top 5 for most shutouts from the last decade, but this is consistent with the fact that run-scoring has been a bit down since MLB instituted testing for steroids and other banned substances.
