Most Extra Inning Shutouts by a Team 1901-2009

Posted by Raphy on August 4, 2009

The Giants have pitched 3 extra innings shutouts this year. This ties them with 8 other teams since 1901. Two teams since 1901 pitched 4 such games and only the 1965 Mets threw 5 (1 was a tie).

LOOKING OVER YOUR LIST OF MORE THAN 300 GAMES OF EXTRAINNINGS SHUT-OUTS, I NOTICED THAT IT DOES NOT INCLUDE A 1-0, IN 11 INNINGS, ON SEPTEMBER 14, 1946 BY JESSIE FLORES, ATHLETICS VS WHITE SOX IN CHICAGO WHERE HE BEAT EDDIE LOPAT, WHO AS WELL THROUGH A COMPLETE GAME, WHICH LASTED 1:55 HOURS. I HAVE THE BOXSCORE.

You're right. I wonder why that is. I'll have to check with Sean.

Who were the pitchers for the Mets in 1965 and how did they throw 5 shutout extra innings!!! Their pitching staff is a mess now. The only 2 good pitchers they have is Johan Santana and Francisco Rodriguez. Johan Santana is 12- 8 with a 2.96 ERA very good stats. In my opinion I do not like Francisco Rodriguez but with his 2.06 ERA and 24 saves yet the Mets still are under .500% winning percentage. Do you think they can come back???

The Mets are definitely done. Rodriguez blew the save after a pretty poor start by Johan and then one of their scrub pitchers hit Mark DeRosa in extra innings to get in the winning run followed by a Pujols grand slam. Plus the guy who is playing the best on that team this year, Castillo, left the game with an ankle injury. I think this game was the nail in the coffin.

1965 New York Mets?? They lost 112 games. 4 of 5 games were 1-0 and the other a tie. Darrell Sutherland won 2 of those games.
