Fast Start to a Young Career

Posted by Raphy on May 3, 2009

In honor of the Celtics victory over the Bulls, here is a search that I came across a few weeks ago:

Most games with a hit in a player's first 30 career game age 20 or younger (since 1954):

                   Games Link to Individual Games
 -----------------+-----+-------------------------
 Roberto Clemente 26 Ind. Games
 Garry Templeton 24 Ind. Games
 Rickey Henderson 24 Ind. Games
 Thad Bosley 24 Ind. Games
 Jay Johnstone 23 Ind. Games
 Danny Ainge 23 Ind. Games
 Chris Speier 22 Ind. Games
 Ron Santo 22 Ind. Games
 Ivan Rodriguez 22 Ind. Games
 Aurelio Rodriguez 22 Ind. Games

Check out the guy at #6.

Ainge was 0-4 in his 30th game so here are his totals through his first 29 games:

His secondary numbers were not very good, but considering that he was 20 years old and playing second base, he had a pretty good run. If you're interested, here are Ainge's (baseball) career numbersĀ  after his 29th game.

Good thing for the Celtics that his career went down I guess.

is it possible to get the four sports reference pages to cross link players that are in both systems? if that makes sense... there can't be all that many right? i mean, definitely less than 50, i would think.

Hmm. My comment of a few days ago must not have been posted.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any players who played in the Majors and either the NBA or the NHL in the same year. Considering that NHL and NBA seasons span two calendar years, I guess abutting the MLB season on either end would count. I know there have been a number of players that have played in both MLB and the NFL in the same season (Bo Jackson and Neon Deion Sanders jump immeditely to mind, but I know there were others, too).
