Cliff Lee’s 6th shutout

Posted by Andy on September 5, 2011

Sorry for a third straight post involving the Phillies, but I see that Cliff Lee has thrown 7 shutouts innings so far tonight and might get his 6th shutout of the season.

If he does, he'll be the first pitcher since Randy Johnson in 1998 to record 6 shutouts in a season:

Rk Player SHO Year Age
1 John Tudor 10 1985 31
2 Tim Belcher 8 1989 27
3 Orel Hershiser 8 1988 29
4 Roger Clemens 8 1988 25
5 Dwight Gooden 8 1985 20
6 Fernando Valenzuela 8 1981 20
7 Roger Clemens 7 1987 24
8 Randy Johnson 6 1998 34
9 Danny Jackson 6 1988 26
10 Tim Leary 6 1988 30
11 Jack Morris 6 1986 31
12 Steve Carlton 6 1982 37
13 Jerry Reuss 6 1980 31
14 Tommy John 6 1980 37

The above list is most shutouts in a season since 1980.

  1. Dark Leviathan Says:

Plus he almost had one during his last start but Ryan Madson went in after 8 2/3 innings with men on base.

  2. Raphy Says:

Lee would also take the all time lead for most shutouts in a season in which all of a pitcher's complete games were shutouts. For whatever that's worth.

  4. Sly in Montreal Says:

And among that list up there (from Tudor to T.John), how many of those guys actually won the Cy Young THAT year?

    Great stat! Thanks! 🙂

  5. Charles Says:

Larry Jaster had 5 SHO's against the Dodgers one in 1966. Has anyone else had that many against 1 team?

  6. M. Scott Eiland Says:

That'll cost Halladay some points in the Cy Young voting--writers love shutouts.

Oh, and five of the guys on that list won the Cy Young (Gooden, Clemens 87, Hershiser, Valenzuela, and Carlton), with three finishing second (Tudor, Jackson, and Reuss). Not bad.

  7. Rob M. Says:

    @5

That's probably a record. Dean Chance, Bob Lemon, and Sandy Koufax (among others, I'm sure) put up 3 shutouts in a season against single teams. Bob Feller threw 4 shutouts against the White Sox in 1946. Juan Marichal threw 4 shutouts against the Mets in 1965. Mort Cooper had 3 shutouts against two teams in 1942.

I'm pretty sure Walter Johnson threw 20+ career shutouts against Philadelphia, but I don't know what his greatest season was.

  8. Charles Says:

Grover Cleveland Alexander with the Phillies shut out the Cards 5 times in 1916.

  9. dfan Says:

    Wow, John Tudor had 16 career shutouts, of which 10 came in 1985. Number of shutouts by year: 0, 0, 0, 1, 2, 1, 10, 0, 0, 1, 0, 1.

  10. Imbroglio21 Says:

Here are all Phillies pitchers who had at least 6 shutouts in a season. http://bbref.com/pi/shareit/rMxHo Lee is the first one to accomplish the feat since SteveCarlton in1982.

  11. Mike Gaber Says:

White Sox Rookie Zach Stewart took a perfect no hitter into the 8th. inning against Minnesota.
He had thrown only 78 pitches.

In the 8th he had a problem with lead-off batter Danny Valencia who finally hit his 8th pitch of the at bat for a double.

Stewart got out of the inning without giving up the run and got 2 strikeouts in the 9th to get the shutout 4-0 with 9 K-s

  12. John Autin Says:

Just curious, Andy -- Were you going to delete the post if Lee hadn't made it, or were you prepared to ride "Dewey Defeats Truman!" to the bitter end? 🙂

FWIW, my game notes are up:

Any other year Tudor gets the Cy. Bad timing.

  14. Johnny Twisto Says:

    Bad timing.

Sorry, those lines always come to mind when I hear those words. ANY underground classic.

Insert a space between "A" and "NY." All apologies.

  17. BDF Says:

That Tudor season gets forgotten because of Gooden's campaign. Makes for a great trivia question, who led MLB in shutouts in 1985. Also forgotten is the fact that Tudor started the season 1-7 and closed it out 20-1 w/a 1.37 ERA! 1985 Cards compete with the 1993 Phils for most fun recent (it's all relative) team not to win a WS.

  18. Cheese Says:

Don't forget Christy Mathewson's 3 shutouts in the WS!
