CG With 14+ Ks And Getting The Loss

Posted by Steve Lombardi on August 17, 2011

Since 1919, how many pitchers have thrown a complete game, whiffing 14 or more, and got the loss in the contest?

Here is the list -

  1. mick Says:

Lesson: if you want to win a ballgame in the last week of June, DON'T pitch Randy Johnson! 8-P

  2. Anon Says:

The 2 1999 Johnson games were the 1st and 2nd in a series of 3 Johnson starts where the DBacks got 0, 1 & 2 hits and were held scoreless in all 3. The next game after the 2 above (7/5/99) just misses the criteria for this list as he took the loss after going 8 (CG) and giving up 1 run but "only" struck out 12.

    For the 3 games his line was 0-3,1.44 ERA , 43 K, 6 BB

For good measure his next start after THAT (7/10/99) was 7IP, 2R (1ER), 11K, 4BB and he took the loss there as well. . . . .that is 4 consecutive games where he struck out at least 11 and took the loss. Wonder if that's ever been done before?

  3. Anon Says:

Well, answered my own question: assuming I used the PI correctly, Johnson is the only pitcher to ever strike out 10 in 4 consecutive games and take the loss in each.

  4. jason Says:

and that wasn't even in the 14-12 hard luck season everyone talks about with johnson!

  5. jason Says:

    sorry it was actually 16-14

  6. Gary W Says:

Jim Maloney's game back in 1965 was interesting. He pitched ten no-hit innings and gave up two hits in the eleventh, including Johnny Lewis' home run. Possibly the best game he ever pitched.

  7. Anon Says:

@5, Jason - "sorry it was actually 16-14"

Ugh, 2004. I'm a DBacks fan and all I can say is that Johnson absolutely got shafted out of a Cy Young by his teammates that year. He was still amazing that year but finished the year pitching with a AAA team behind him and probably not even a good AAA team at that. Juan Brito was his catcher to finish the year. Very few of the prospects that played the 2nd half of that year ever played again and most only played a little more. That was a truly awful team.

  8. zack Says:

    6/24/97

    I remember that game!

Mark McGwire hit a 500+ foot home run off Randy Johnson. It may have been the longest of his career.

  9. Cheese Says:

Poor Sam McDowell...zero earned runs. Ouch!

  10. Jonathan Frankel Says:

From the "pre- BR" era, there are a few more I have id'ed (1897-1909, 1910/12 - AL only):

    Tom Hughes, CHN, 7/31/1901, CHN @ CIN, 15 k's, score: 0-6, 15 inn [Hahn k'ed 11 as well]

    Rube Waddell, PHA, 8/19/1904, CLE @ PHA, 15 k's, score: 1-2

    Rube Waddell, PHA, 9/6/1904, game 1, PHA @ NYA, 14 k's, score: 2-5

    Rube Waddell, PHA, 9/5/1905, PHA @ BOSA, 17 k's, score 2-3, 13 innings

Joe Harris, BOSA, 9/1/1906, PHA @ BOSA, 15 k's, score 1-4, 24 innings [Coombs w/ 19 in a cg win] [Harris went 2-21 that season]

Jeff Pfiester, CHN, 5/30/1906, game 1, SLN @ CHN 17 k's, score: 2-4, 15 innings [CHN lost both games of a doubleheader in the season that they only lost 36 all season!]

    Ed Walsh, CHA, 10/2/1908, CHA@ CLE, 15 k's, score: 0-1 [Joss pitched a Perfect Game opposite him w/ ONLY 3 k's]

    Jack Coombs, PHA, 8/4/1910, PHA@CHA, 16 k's, score: 0-0, 16 innings [Ed Walsh w/ 10 k's]

    Earl Hamilton, SLA, 9/19/1912, WAS@SLA, 14 k's, score: 2-4 [Tom Hughes 8 k's]

    A couple of comments:
Needless to say pitchers finished their game more often in this era and finished their extra inning games more often as well. These are still nice accomplishments regardless.

Rube Waddell made this list 3 times out of the many 14+ K games. Haven't check how many entries he would have if you lowered the bar to 10 k's.

The inclusion of the tie (not a loss) was done just because the game was remarkable, especially for the era.

Additionally, the Walsh/Joss 1908 game is legendary - one of the top game match-ups of all-time (pardon the hyperbole).

  11. Dukeofflatbush Says:

Not entirely on track, so sorry for breaking any momentum in the thread, but Boston had 3 hits in both games of a double header. amazingly they got a split. But does anyone know if that is a record.
They also got just three hits the game before the double dip. This after mashing 23 hits in the two previous games.
That's the great thing about this sport, you never know what you'll get.

  12. nightfly Says:

Game scores of 106, 101, and two 99s. That is some impressive dealing. And I believe that Maloney had already no-hit the Mets in 1964 (or was that Jim Bunning?), so for them to scrape the win after ten futile innings must have been particularly pleasant - or frustrating, if you're Jim Maloney.

  13. Kahuna Tuna Says:

Duke, according to the Play Index, most consecutive games with exactly three hits is four, by the 2003 Tigers in their second through fifth games of the season. ("Could be a long year . . .")

  14. Thomas Says:

This post is obviously anti-Phillies, Halladay, Mulholland, & Carlton!! Shesh...

    I kid, I kid..

  15. Genis Says:

One thing that caught my eye was Randy Johnson's 100 strikes in the 1997 game against Oakland. I was wondering how rare that is in the last 20 years?

  16. Christopher Says:

@14 It is more anti-Cleveland! Seven times that Cleveland pitchers have been in such a spot, with poor Sam McDowell doing it four times for them.

  17. DavidJ Says:

Wow, happened four times over a two-week span in 1986.

  18. Jeremy Says:

Boston also had 3 hits in today's (Wednesday) game...

  19. Thomas Says:

    @15.

I'm seeing 10 games since 1992 with a pitcher throwing 100 (or more) strikes.

6 by Randy Johnson (with his high being 111 strikes in a 160 pitch game in 1992)
    2 by Roger Clemens
    1 by Livan Hernandez
    1 by Tim Wakefield

Wakefield's game is mind boggling. 8 innings pitched, 158 pitches, 0 k's, 16 hits allowed, 3 walks. Wow!

  20. Thomas Says:

Also, it's the most pitches in the PI without striking a guy out. The next highest is Bill Wegman throwing 134 in 1992.

  21. Dave V. Says:

@11 & @13 - and the Red Sox got held to 3 hits again by the Rays, for the third straight game (though I'm showing they had 6 hits in their 4th-to-last game). So they have a chance to tie the record tomorrow.

  22. Doug Says:

    @2, Johnson's 1999 games.

And a week after Johnson's 2 heart-breakers, the same fate befell Pedro.

    46 times since 1919, including:
    - three times in a 13-day period for Johnson and Martinez (1999)
    - four times in a 14-day period for Scott, Blyleven, Langston, Youmans (1986)

    Weird.

  23. TheGoof Says:

How did Nolan Ryan only do this three times?

  24. Dukeofflatbush Says:

On all the Randy Johnson talk and him getting the short end of 4 straight games, at least we can say that it begun the precedent of BEST pitcher not most WINS dictating Cy Young votes.
Not that mike Hampton was a slouch that season. He was 22-4, but backed by Biggio, Bagwell, Alou and others.
So Greinke, Felix, the Freak and others can thank Randy for their Cys

  25. Raphy Says:

    @11,18...
Boston had 6 hits in the game before the double header, so after today, their streak is now 3 games.

  26. mccombe35 Says:

    Terry Mulholland? That is shocking!

  27. John Autin Says:

Pardon my CG tangent ... The Rays got a CG in both ends of their doubleheader against the BoSox. I was lamenting that the P-I has no efficient way of finding such events, but at last I found an online citation:

The last time a team had 2 CGs on the same day was 8/13/93, Milwaukee sweeping a doubleheader from Detroit. Rookie Angel Miranda won the opener with his 2nd straight CG win (he would get only 1 more CG in his brief career). Ricky Bones took the nightcap, also his 2nd straight CG. The Brewers led the AL with 26 CGs that year. Miranda and Bones both allowed 1 run on 6 hits; they threw 79 and 78 strikes, respectively.

Yes, it was a Friday the 13th.
