Perfect in Extra-Inning Games
Posted by Raphy on August 17, 2011
This season the Dodgers have played in only 6 extra-inning games, but have won them all. Since 1901, only 3 teams have gone an entire season in which they played at least one extra inning game and not lost any of them. Here are the all time leaders in extra-inning winning percentage.

Fun stuff. You might enjoy an article I wrote a couple of years ago about the 1995 Indians' extra innings dominance. (Also, the flip side of this is the 1969 Expos, who lost all 12 of their extra innings affairs. There's a link to a piece on that team in the previously linked article.)

Thanks Geoff! Your article is an interesting read, as usual.

I think it's interesting to note the difference in game times between the A's of '28 and this years Dodgers. I'm guessing guys didn't step out of the box to ask for time when Grove was on the mound.

It's interesting to see the 1959 Pirates there, with an amazing 19 wins in extra innings. And Roy Face was right there in the middle of things--he pitched in 15 of those wins, and was the winning pitcher in 11 of them. Eleven! That was the year, of course, when he went 18-1 in relief. He also blew the save in 1 of the 2 losses, the bum. But he didn't pitch in the other loss, which happens to be one of the most famous games ever played--Harvey Haddix's twelve-inning perfect game, which he lost in the thirteenth.

@4 That is interesting. It didn't occur to me that one their two losses was the Haddix game. Here are their extra-inning games from that season. (The numbering is off, but they're all there.

@3 WK - I was going nuts last week when the Phils played in LA. Kemp and Ethier especially were guilty of stepping out of the box and fiddling around. It drove me bonkers. No way that all 3 games should have lasted 3.5 hours.

@3/ W.K.Kortas - and if you need further evidence that games of yesteryear were played at a quicker pace, look at the time in #5 for Harvey Haddix's twelve-inning perfect game for the 1959 Pirates - 2:54, about the the average time for a _nine inning_ game today. Twelve of their 22 extra-inning games took less than three hours, including 2:14 and 2:24.

Now if the Dodgers would win some nine-inning games I will be a happy fan.

The Dodgers and '48 Reds are the only sub-.500 teams.
But, the '95 Indians were the only team to parlay their skill/good fortune into a pennant.

I would have thought there would be several 1-0 or 2-0 teams on a list like this. Apparently, everyone plays a decent number of extra-inning games.

Apparently, everyone plays a decent number of extra-inning games.
That is a very true statement. The fewest extra-inning games played by a team over a full season is three, by the 1936 St. Louis Browns. Every other team currently in the B-R PBP database (1911 NL, 1919-present all teams) played at least five extra-inning games every season. The average number of extra-inning games per team per season is 14.6, which (with ties) translates to about 9.3% of all games played.
The team that played the most extra-inning games in a season is the 1943 Red Sox, with 31 (15 wins, 14 losses, two ties).
