12 Responses to “Miguel Cabrera’s 3 HR in a loss”

  1. Andy Says:

In the years for which we have box scores, teams are 365-77 in games in which on of their players hit 3+ homers. As you might imagine, the record is less favorable since 1993. Used to be that 3 HR was all but a guarantee of a victory.

  2. DavidRF Says:

Actually the record has not been less favorable since 1993.

    1920s 13-2 .867
    1930s 27-8 .771
    1940s ?
    1950s 35-3 .921
    1960s 34-12 .739
    1970s 44-11 .800
    1980s 41-14 .745
    1990s 77-12 .865
    2000s 94-15 .862

Its not cut an dry, but the trend seems to more favorable rather than less. My guess is that more of these are solo homers in low-scoring eras.

  3. Andy Says:

    I stand corrected yet again.

  4. Kahuna Tuna Says:

Filling in the missing line from DavidRF's #2:

    1940s 18-2 .900 (one tie)

Here's something strange. Johnny Mize was the three-homer guy in both losses — for the Cardinals on September 8, 1940 (first game) and for the Giants on April 24, 1947. He also hit three homers in the tie game between the Cardinals and Reds on May 13, 1940. In his major-league career, Mize hit three homers in a game five times. His teams' record in those five games was one win, three losses, and one tie.

  5. Johnny Twisto Says:

I believe Mize had the most 3-HR games (I thought he had done it 6 times) (and the Interweb appears to agree with me, and also says Sosa matched him, which of course I had no memory of since it happened in the last 15 years)

  6. DavidRF Says:

FWIW, my 1950s line is also missing 1950 & 1951.

  7. Nate Says:

The Cubs lost not one but TWO games in 2001 when Sosa hit 3 HR.

  8. Nate Says:

And they had done the same thing to Kingman in 1979!

  9. Kahuna Tuna Says:

Yes, there was a sixth Mize three-homer game that I missed: September 15, 1950, for the Yankees against the Tigers. The Yankees lost that game 9-7. Mize's teams' record in his three-homer games was thus 1-4-1.

Wikipedia list of all three-homer games by individual hitters.

  10. John Q Says:

I was at that Reyes game which was very odd because you don't expect a hitter like Reyes to hit 3hr in a game.

  11. koma Says:

and they did it twice to Ernie Banks on
    1962-05-29 and 1963-06-09

plus another 3 times giving 9 3-homer game losses, far in front of the Tigers and the Indians with 6

  12. Djibouti Says:

I'm a couple days late on this post, but I just wanted to comment on the crazy game that Art Shamsky had in '66. If you sort the table by WPA, you find Shamsky had an insane 1.503. Shamsky was brought in as a defensive replacement in the top of the 8th as part of a double switch bringing pitcher Don Nottebart in, taking out pitcher Joe Nuxhall and 1B Gordy Coleman and moving Deron Johnson from LF to 1B (Shamsky came in at LF). He had 3 ABs in the game, all HRs. In the bottom of the 8th he had a 2-run shot that gave the Reds an 8-7 lead. In the bottom of the 10th he had a solo shot that tied the game at 9. In the bottom of the 12th he had another 2-run shot to tie the game at 11. The Reds bullpen continued to implode and gave up 3 runs in the 13th to lose the game. His ABs had wWPA values of -54%, -47%, and -49% (I wonder if anyone has ever had 3 ABs in a game with an abs(wWPA) greater than 50%). 3 clutch late HRs all by the same guy, it must have been one hell of a game to watch.
