Joey Devine: No Earned Runs in Last 30.1 IP since 2008

Posted by John Autin on May 28, 2011

Oakland reliever Joey Devine is back after reconstructive elbow surgery that cost him the entire 2009-10 seasons. Devine finished 2008 on a roll, allowing only 3 unearned runs in his last 26.1 IP. (That same year, teammate Brad Ziegler set the all-time start-of-career record with 38 straight scoreless IP.) Devine has added 4 scoreless IP to his streak so far this year. Below are the longest no-ER streaks since 2006, by innings pitched. Β (Note: These areΒ game streaks, sorted by total IP during the streak. Some of the streaks may have been preceded or followed by one or more scoreless IP in a game in which they allowed an earned run.)

  1. Neil L. Says:

JA, nitpicking here, but you only went back to 2006. The fact that there 27 pitchers on your list in that time span shows that long no-ER appearances are not that uncommon.

What if you bumped the IP up a bit?

  2. elgato7664 Says:

He managed to not allow an earned run in his AAA stint (12.1 IP).

  3. Neil L. Says:

JA, if one of the search criteria on the original list was 25+ IP, why are 11 pitchers with < 25 IP there?

  4. Zachary Says:

The fact that Zack Greinke tops the second list is probably the least surprising factoid in the history of the universe. Much like Ted Williams' 1941, I look at that stretch of Greinke's career just to make myself smile.

  5. Josh Says:

    setting the record straight...

currently maintains a streak of 31.1 innings without yielding an earned run - 5 this year and 26.1 in 2008. The last earned run off Devine was May 20, 2008.

    *** (RECORD IS 59 OREL HERSCHISER) ***.

another coal to throw on the fire: Devine is also chasing the innings/outings without giving up a homer record as well....he hasn't given up a home run since the Giants' Moises Alou went deep on April 7, 2006. Devines homerless streak currently covers 66 outings and 259 batters...

*** (RECORD IS 86.1 innings, Saul Rivera, WSH) ***

ps- I think his number of 33 this year is great!!! DEVINE COMEBACK!!! regardless of weather he reaches/exceeds the records above or not, he is my favorite releiver hands down. He has worked extremely hard, and fought tooth and nail to come back both now and also in atlanta... he has amazing heart, spirit, patience, resiliance, and obviously talent... he wasnt a 1st round pick for no reason...

I've watched every game of his career (minors included), and i will continue to do so...

  6. Josh Says:

not sure of the exact innings without a homerun total, only the 66 outings and 259 batters figures. please post exact innings total if someone knows it, im having trouble finding the game logs needed to get the innings figure 100% accurately.. i could subtract hits and walks etc.. but i dont think that will be accurate enough... if someone could post i would be very greatful..

  7. John Autin Says:

@3, Neil L. -- Yeah, I goofed the 25 IP cutoff in the first table -- I had to paste that table a 2nd time for some reason and forgot to delete the rows below 25 IP. ("Newbie!")

  8. John Autin Says:

@1, Neil L. -- "The fact that there [17] pitchers on your list [since 2006] shows that long no-ER appearances are not that uncommon."

Could it be that you have "divined" the hidden point of the post? πŸ™‚

  9. John Autin Says:

@1, Neil L. -- "What if you bumped the IP up a bit?"

Valid question; technical answer: Streak Finders are memory hogs. I can't set a minimum on games or innings; I can only set the years and the performance criteria.

(I'd like to post a list of the 11 game streaks of no ER in the past 20 years that reached 30 IP, but I still haven't figured out how to post a P-I results table in a comment and have it come out legible.)

  10. John Autin Says:

@5-6, Josh -- Devine has a very long way to go to catch the record no-HR streak. Greg Minton didn't allow a HR for 3+ years, 1979 through May 1, 1982, a streak of 269.1 IP and 123 games.

The streak was broken by Mets catcher John Stearns, who hit only 4 HRs that year.

  11. Josh Says:

That guy (Chris Burke) who hit the homer off Devine in the 2005 division series (a DS record 18 innings) has become a complete washout! Isn't it funny how complete nobodies seem to end streaks or disrupt good careers so often...

.then again, if a pitcher is pitching a nobody they would probably tend to relax more. Additionaly, if there is a good hitter coming up after the nobody, the pitcher is most likely thinking of how to pitch the good hitter, not ever expecting a nobody to get off a lucky swing....

but, yes I now know, Devine has a long way for the homerless streak.. thanks for finding the correct info and sorry for my mistake (it was very late lol)... however, i am still waiting on the answer to my question regarding Devines actual homerless inning total...

Devine ABSOLUTELY has a shot at achieving the longest unearned run streak by the end of this season though.

He has now starting collecting HOLDS, which he has many years to build on. (Hold Record: Mike Stanton, 266 holds (not an official stat i realize) .....however since Bailey and Zeigler are probably first picks for closers, the save opportunities wont arrise just yet, they will later... but Devine is young and has probably 10-12 "solid" years, at least, to add to his numbers...

It was very fun watching Vlad strike out live last night though, and he almost got the next batter as well who managed to just nip what would have been strike three... πŸ™‚

ps- i must also say, Fuentes definitly must go!! He obviously pitches poorly and he has a very hard toungue, and i dont see how that will help the team as a whole, individual players, or managers...

Thanks again for the correct info., please find the other answer for me. much appreciated.... Josh

  12. John Autin Says:

    @11, Josh -- Devine's homerless streak is 66 IP over 66 games.

  13. Neil L. Says:

    @1 @8
JA, duhh "1" is next to "2" on the keyboard and I clearly hit the wrong key. Thanks for the polite correction.

  14. Neil L. Says:

    @5 @6 @11

Josh, good posts. You are obviously a Joey Devine observer/fan.

Keep us up to date on his progress.

Not to be a BRef shill, but why not subscribe to the Player Index database? Then you can answer your own questions, including the top three on your searches.

"Devine ABSOLUTELY has a shot at achieving the longest unearned run streak by the end of this season though."

You meant "longest consecutive IP with an ERA of zero", didn't you?

Be careful about making absolute statements regarding pitchers. The human arm, elbow and shoulder are delicate mechanisms, subject to failure at any time, as Joey himself well knows.

  15. Josh Says:

thank you for all the info and feedback, i dont want to bring up injuries for obvious reasons.. I do feel Oakland has pushed him hard since his return, with back to back nights and such, concidering hes not expected to take on the closer role just yet... I understand they want to see if he can handle it, but if you want the Ace in the pocket dont bend it, someone might end up seeing it poking out... his out pitch sure looks nice though.... and i use the word ABSOLUTELY because theres over 100 games left, and even if he is used only every three games (as I would idealy do), he will still have the 30 innings he needs... If i was Geren id tuck the card in my pocket a little farther.... πŸ˜› ive favorited this thread so I will return periodically with important bits of info. Thanks again everyone...

  16. Josh Says:

    33 innings...

  17. Josh Says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

currently maintains a streak of 33.2 innings without yielding an earned run - 7.1 this year and 26.1 in 2008. The last earned run off Devine was May 20, 2008.

its over.... pretty sure it counted against devine... so it would seem its over... not good... πŸ™ boohoohoo... πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™

  18. Josh Says:

Devine is now just chasing the innings without giving up a homer record as well....he hasn't given up a home run since the Giants' Moises Alou went deep on April 7, 2006. Devines homerless streak currently covers 68.1 innings and 276 batters...

    long way to go...

sorry devine had a rough outing... πŸ™ *sniffle*

  19. Josh Says:

im not happy is an understatement... fuentes coulda saved it, its his job to save them... but no... i understand devine got himself in the position, but fuentes has been oaklands bad wheel.... im sorry devine.. i hope you can pull it back together.. πŸ™ im gunna go to sleep now... depressed...

  20. Josh Says:

cant sleep... so not happy... fuentes needed to get one out!!!1 just one out!!! and its counted against devine... i mean at least let devine throw the pitch for the hit... oh man i cant stand it... BARF!!!

  21. Josh Says:

    FUENTES SUCKS!

  22. Josh Says:

even though he has a long way to go, Joey Devine is still holding down a long innings in a row without allowing a homerun (Devines homerless streak currently covers 68.1 innings and 276 batters...*** (RECORD IS Greg Minton, didn't allow a HR for 3+ years, 1979 through May 1, 1982, a streak of 269.1 IP and 123 games) ***). BUT JOEY DEVINE would have had a chance at breaking the unearned run streak record by the end of the season if not for fuentes... i will keep the world posted on the homerless streak, and hope that devine can recover from tonight... but he will need a few seasons to break the homerless record... so it will be a while before i post again... sad to say...

  23. John Autin Says:

Josh, I feel your pain. And while I'm no fan of Fuentes, it's only fair to note that (a) Carl Crawford is a pretty good hitter, no matter what his average says this year, and (b) Devine himself allowed a couple of inherited runners to score during his scoreless streak.

Try to be glad that Devine is healthy and pitching well. If he helps the A's get back to the postseason, that will be more important in the big picture than any personal streak.

And don't wait for another Devine milestone to come back to the B-R blogs! πŸ™‚

  24. Josh Says:

thanks, ill keep my eye on other important matters to comment on in the meantime... I just mean I can't help but feel like a jinxer on some level... so i will keep my mouth shut about Devine, and only pray, that he will amass 33 more good ones by the end of the season..
