Matt Albers and relievers allowing 5+ earned runs without recording an out
Posted by Andy on May 24, 2011
Just a quickie here...wanted to see how often a relief pitcher gives up 5 or more earned runs without registering an out, as happened to Matt Albers the other day when the Cubs rallied for a victory against the Red Sox:

So there you have it...it tends to happen a handful of times each season (recently, at least).

Interesting how this sort of situation seems to mess with the "App, Dec" column (well, at least the "App" part) in some of these cases, at least as far as I understand it (the "ending" inning should never be lower than the "starting" inning, right?!?!?).

Good catch there, Mark. I expect you're right as to why it seems weird.

I remember the Lidge game very well. It wasn't a save situation (obviously, seeing as Brad was perfect on those that year). He gave up his first home run of the year and ultimately his ERA went up more than a full run in late July. His ERA for the year was 1.95, but if you take out that one game, it's 1.29

I guess this is off the subject, but some of the names on this list are awesome. Esmerling Vasquez, Masahide Kobayashi, Randor Bierd, and my personal favorite, Eulogio de la Cruz (preferably said with an exaggerated Hispanic accent).
I hope de la Cruz gets back to the majors, so I can say his full name as often as possible when he's on TV and I'm in a public place. "Are you a fan of Eulogio de la Cruz? Have you seen Eulogio de la Cruz pitch before? Do you hope to someday get an autograph from Eulogio de la Cruz?" Etc., etc.
Some people have big dreams, and some don't. What more can I say?

Building off #3 Doug...as a long-suffering Pirates fan, nice to see Josh Fogg did this TWICE, and Ryan Vogelsong not too long after, ugh. At least a couple years later the Bucs did it to Saarloos (and even in doing that, they only won the game by 4 runs).

@3
Nolan Ryan in his final appearence also gave up 5 runs without retiring a single batter. It was September 22, 1993. 5 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks. The last hit was a grand slam to Dann Howitt - the last of Howitt's 5 career home runs.
I was always a fan of Ryan, but when friend's of mine used to joke about how bad Steve Carlton was at the end, I used to counter that Nolan Ryan pitched until he literally could not retire a single batter.

@5
Jeff, what could Chris Berman do with his name, should he get back to the big show?

@8:
That's a tough one. I immediately thought: "Eulogio (On Wheels) de la Cruz", but "hell" and "Eulogio" really don't sound similar enough even when "Eulogio" is pronounced properly in Spanish. I guess I'll need some time on this one.

Looking at Doug's list @3, anybody know why many of the items say "GS-1" while the others say "GS-0"? Is it top vs bottom of the first inning? Some programming peculiarity?
