SABR’s BioProject: Roland Hemond
Posted by Mark Armour on February 23, 2011
Yesterday the Baseball Hall of Fame announced that Roland Hemond, long-time baseball executive and excellent man, had been named the second winner of the Buck O'Neill award. This seems like as good a time as any to point out Bill Nowlin's fine biography of Hemond (which will be updated for this award).
Although most of our biographies are on players, we do have a lot of executives, announcers, umpires, etc. Here are a few winners of the Ford Frick Award, for example.
Would you believe the guy who patented the chest protector?
The point is, if you find a life fascinating enough to spend time researching it, and the person is somehow tied to baseball, our project will want to publish the story. It is interesting to sit back and see what comes over the wall.

Hemond is listed as the founder of the Arizona Fall League.
He can be seen on occasion at AFL games and I can tell you the guy is a rock star.
He could probably walk through a supermarket unnoticed, but a ballpark?
No way, man.
