Backwards K To End Your Team’s Post-Season

24th October 2010

How many batters have gone down looking to end his team's post-season - like Ryan Howard did for the Phillies in Game 6 of the 2010 NLCS, and, like Alex Rodriguez did for the Yankees in Game 6 of the 2010 AlCS?

Post-Season Visitors Batting Around In The 8th

16th October 2010

In Game 1 of the 2010 ALCS, the Yankees batted around in the top of the 8th inning. Filtering the data in this Play Index query suggests that was only the 3rd time in post-season history that a visiting team sent 9+ batters to the plate in the 8th inning of a game. Here are the other times in addition to last night:

Post-Season Pinch-Hit Home Runs

11th October 2010

In the comment section of another thread there has been a bit of a discussion about post-season pinch-hit home runs. You can create the entire list by using the Postseason Batter Event finder, searching All Teams for Home Runs and filtering for Position "PH". (I don't know if the PH for DH definition problem exists here or not.) Here is the complete list of 51:

Post-Season Go-Ahead Pinch Hit Home Runs When Trailing

10th October 2010

Eric Hinske had a huge home run tonight that went for naught. His 2 run pinch-hit home run temporarily gave the Braves an eighth inning lead over the Giants. In post-season history only 2 previous players had hit pinch hit home runs that took their team from behind and put them into the lead.

Bunting for a Hit with 2 Outs and a RISP from the 4 Hole

19th September 2010

Orioles' clean-up hitter Adam Jones drove in a run today by bunting for a single with a runner on 3rd and 2 outs. A play like that is certainly strange and doesn't happen that often. In fact, according to the PI, the last time a clean-up hitter had a 2-out bunt single with a runner in scoring position was 1999. That year it happened twice. The first was by the Brewer's Dave Nilsson in the first inning on August 8th and the second by Jermaine Dye in the 3rd inning on October 1st.

All-Star IBB Issued

12th July 2010

Using Play Index, I was surprised to see that there have been 25 intentional walks issued in All-Star Games.

At first blush, I thought "You have to be a great hitter to get an IBB in a game that's an exhibition and where you have an All-Star batter coming up behind you..." But, then I remembered that pitchers used to hit in this game and that there's always the situation where you're walking someone to set up a force play.

In any event, it's a fun list to look at - and note the scores, innings, and runners on and outs situations for each of the 25 IBB issues in All-Star play to date. Which one strikes your fancy and why?

Intentional walk with first base occupied

7th July 2010

Last night, David Ortiz was intentionally walked twice to bring Niuman Romero to the plate. Romero had been forced into the game after Kevin Youkilis left with an injury. What's odd about that? The first time it happened, first base was occupied and Ortiz was the go-ahead run, meaning the intentional walk put the tying run in scoring position. Click through for more info.
