What do you notice? Well, to get 6 hits in 9 innings, your team needs to score a whole bunch of runs so you can get 6 ABs. For all these guys, only Wally Backman's team scored fewer than 10 runs.

There are a ton of interesting things about this list of games. For starters:

  • The 1990 game Backman did it in was fascinating. (Click on the date above next to Backman's name to see the box score.) First of all, they would have scored more runs if not for leaving so many LOB (left on base.) Backman had one hit where the runner was thrown out at home to end the inning. Bobby Bonilla had a terrible day: Fly out in the 1st inning, stranding a runner at third, followed by a ground out in the 3rd inning, stranding another runner at 3rd, followed by a fly out in the 5th, and then a strikeout in the 6th to leave the bases loaded, followed by another ground out. Ending three innings with runners at 3rd is not good. And everybody's favorite Barry Bonds had a couple of homers in this game.
  • Two players, Joe Randa and Omar Vizquel, actually had 7 at-bats in which to get their 6 hits.
  • Shawn Green turned the trick while hitting 4 home runs.
  • Edgardo Elfonzo had 3 HR himself.

By the way, since 1957, 6 hits in a 9-inning game has been achieved 25 times. It was done an additional 23 times in games that went extra innings.

A non-registered reader Mike emailed me with a great point about this list. Most of the 6-hit 9-inning games were on the road, and the 6th hit came in the top of the 9th inning. Harris achieved the feat at home, having only 8 innings of batting since the Braves were ahead after the middle of the 9th.

Although Figgins' game also came at home, he did actually bat in the 9th with the game tied, driving in the winning run.

Of these 15 guys, the only guy other than Harris to do it in 8 innings was Galarraga. His 6th hit came with 2 outs in the 8th, right after two Rockies homers put the game out of reach.

A great point by a reader!
