  1. Matthew Glidden Says:

Wow, more HOFers than I expected on that list, even leaving aside Maranville. Wonder how the list looks if you go with 6'6" and OVER?

  2. josh blue Says:

Pedroia should be on this list. i know he is isted as 5'7 or 5'8, but cmon....

  3. Greg Says:

    #1, Kingman is probably tops

  4. Jick Says:

Looks like Billy Hamilton and Dummy Hoy move into a tie for 7th place if you include years before 1901.

I'm highly amused to see Rafael Belliard in the top fifty of a home run list, no matter what the other qualifiers are.

  5. DavidRF Says:

Guys with 19th century playing time include...

    Tommy Leach - 63
    Billy Hamilton - 40
    Dummy Hoy - 40
    Charlie Duffee - 35
    Willie Keeler - 33

  6. kds Says:

Little Joe hit out 268. You know everybody that short lies about his height.

  7. DavidRF Says:

    @3

    HR's 6'6" or taller:

    Dave Winfield - 462
    Dave Kingman - 442
    Frank Howard - 382
    Adam Dunn - 354
    Darryl Strawberry - 335
    Richie Sexson - 306
    Tony Clark - 254
    ... then a big dropoff
    Corey Hart 98
    Walt Bond 41

  8. Hartvig Says:

#6 My second thought, right after "I'll bet Hack Wilson is near the top" was "How tall was Joe Morgan?" Missed it by that much, as Maxwell Smart would say.

And I love any lists that remind me of Walt "No neck" Williams.

  9. birtelcom Says:

#1 and #3: Winfield, not Kingman has the most homers among players listed at 6'6" or taller. But Adam Dunn is threateting Top 10:
    Dave Winfield 465
    Dave Kingman 442
    Frank Howard 382
    Adam Dunn 354
    Darryl Strawberry 335
    Richie Sexson 306
    Tony Clark 251
    Corey Hart 98
    Walt Bond 41
    Billy Ashley 28

  10. birtelcom Says:

sorry, David @7, my post went out as yours came in.

  11. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

I was wondering which 6'6"+ players had the lowest HR/AB ratio -- and the most stolen bases.

  12. RUDY S Says:

How about Hack Wilson with more than 4x the runner ups' total!

  13. Richard Chester Says:

Only 9 players on the list played past 1950.

  14. Frank Reich Says:

    #11 That would be:
    Darryl Strawberry: 16.2 AB/HR with 221 SB
    and
    Dave Winfield: 23.7 AB/HR with 223 SB

No others have at least 100 HR and 100 SB

  15. Imbroglio21 Says:

    @11

I had to get the HR/AB from another source, so those will be HR/100PA (ascending), with a minimum of 500 career PAs, because the initial query spit out too many zeroes.

    HEIGHT >= 78

  16. Greg Says:

I forgot Winfield was that tall

  17. Greg Says:

There was a time when Kingman led all HOF eligible players with most HR and not in the HOF. Steroids/PEDs helped him there.

  18. Mike S. Says:

One amazing piece of trivia: How many of you remember that Freddie Patek, all 5'4" of him, once hit 3 HR in the same game! Yup. June 20, 1980 at Fenway. Amazingly, after that game, he hit just one other HR the rest of his career.

  19. Terry Says:

I think there's a mistake at the website here, regarding former White Sox shortstop Harry Chappas. I remember Chappas being 5'3", not 5'7". He was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, one spring, Chappas had one career homerun.

  20. Mike Felber Says:

I do not think Morgan was under 5'7". Many guys lie about their height, effectively giving their height with shoes. I'll bet it is more common to try to add more height via claiming the round # of 6.'

  21. Kingturtle Says:

Yogi Berra hit more. and they list him as 5'7", but that was a stretch.

  22. mccombe35 Says:

    @7

Big Hurt just missed it being listed at 6'5".....

  23. mccombe35 Says:

    Also,

So Donnie Sadler is the only player 5'6" or under to hit a HR in the last 10 years?

  24. Imbroglio21 Says:

    It seems so.

  25. dodgerdave Says:

I remember a player named Chad Fonville who was 5'6" and played for the Dodgers a number of years ago. He never hit a home run. I wonder how many of those players on that list have only inside-the-park home runs.

  26. Kahuna Tuna Says:

As his page sponsor notes, Dutch Zwilling (#9 on the list) was "Not only the last man (alphabetically) to play major league baseball, but also the all-time HR leader for the short-lived Federal League."

  27. Richard Chester Says:

    @25

There was a high percentage of inside-the-park home runs prior to 1920 so I would not be surprised if many of the players with just a few homers had all inside-the-park homers. Tommy Leach had 49.

An indication of the high percentage is the fact that Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker and Honus Wagner all had at least 33% of their homers as inside-the park.

  28. MikeD Says:

I've stood next to Joe Morgan. Granted, he was about 60 so he might have shrunk just a bit since his playing days, but I don't think he was 5'7." Nothing scientific here, but he had to be close.

Yogi Berra is also listed at 5'7." He was considered short, which is why some teams didn't want to give him a shot. (Interesting that the Yankees singed both Rizzuto and Berra, two vertically challenged players that other lesser teams passed on.) He's in his 80s and has definately shrunk since his playing days, but my guess is he wasn't 5'7" if that's what he was listed at.

Yet, Steve post did note this was about players "listed" at 5'6" or shorter, so no way to tell which ones added some height.

  29. MadDoc Says:

What did you have against WIlliam Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy? He stands at 5'4" to 5'5" and no higher. (Proof of his heights from a 1898 documents)

  30. ART B Says:

Hack Wilson was amazing. He is listed as 5'6", 190 pounds and had a huge chest and massive arms. He leld the National League single season HR record for over 60 years and still holds the all time single season RBI record. Sadly, he was a hopeless alcoholic.

  31. topper009 Says:

    Yogi Berra was only 4'18"

  39. Joseph Says:

I did some random searches on the number of players under 5 feet 6 inches at various times. I counted them if they made one PA:

    1901-1905: 42

    1921-1925: 27

    1951-1955: 8

    2001-2005: 1

So, it's not a surprise to see the old time players dominating the list.

By way of comparison, players at least 6 feet:

    1901-1905: 216

    2001-2005: 1456

Players at least 6 feet 2 inches:

    1901-1905: 57

    2001-2005: 881

Players at least 6 feet 5 inches:

1901-1905: 4 (they combined for zero HR's in about 200 plate appearances and only one of them batted over .200 AVG.)

    2001-2005: 148

The tallest guy ever to make a plate appearance seems to be the current player, pitcher Jon Rauch. He's 6 feet 11 inches. He's hit one HR.

  40. John Autin Says:

@19, Terry -- According to his B-R Bullpen page:
"Harry Chappas got attention because he was listed as 5'3" (he was really 5'6")...."

Of course, that doesn't explain why he's listed at 5'7" on his B-R player page.

  41. John Autin Says:

In the expansion era (1961-present), there have been only 4 players 5'5" or less (per B-R).

Two of them played for the expansion Angels in 1961: OF Albie Pearson and SS Fritz Brickell.

Brickell was just a scrub, but Pearson was a bit of a star: He was the 1958 AL Rookie of the Year with Washington (it was a very weak rookie crop); and from 1961-63, Pearson averaged 100 Runs (leading the AL in '62), a .392 OBP (ranking 4th in '61 and 2nd in '63). Pearson posted a .370 OBP in '65 (the AL OBP was .317), but he was out of the game a year later due to chronic back problems.

  42. John Autin Says:

P.S. In 1956, Albie Pearson won the Texas League (AA) batting title at .371 (27 points above the #2 man). He also recorded 21 OF assists that year, 28 the next year -- perhaps a case of everyone trying to take the extra base on him?
