7+ ER & 4 IP Or Less In A Post-Season Game

Posted by Steve Lombardi on October 18, 2010

In Game 2 of the 2010 ALCS, the Yankees Phil Hughes allowed 7 earned runs while only throwing 4 innings. How often does that happen? How many pitchers have appeared in a post-season game and allowed 7 earned runs or more while going 4 innings pitched or less?

Here's the answer -

If Hughes manages to do "it" again, he'll join Tom Glavine and Tommy Greene as the only pitchers to pull the trick twice.

  1. John Autin Says:

This reinforces my puzzlement as to why Girardi sent Hughes out to start the 5th inning, having already yielded 5 runs on 8 hits (including a HR and 4 doubles) and 3 walks.

  2. Dr. Doom Says:

Can't say I'd be upset if Andy Pettitte joined the two-time club tonight...

  3. Steve Lombardi Says:

Dr. Doom - LOL, even if he still got the "W"?

  4. Brett Says:

I think Fox mentioned that he was the only postseason pitcher to do "it" as well as allowing 10 hits. Clearly they meant starter to do it, as Witasick also allowed 10 hits.

  5. eorns Says:

Glavine's first game was in the 1992 NLCS vs Pittsburgh. The winning pitcher that game? Tim Wakefield! In that game, Glavine got through the first pretty easily but then allowed 8 runs without recording an out in the second.

  6. Djibouti Says:

And to think, Morales had only given up one hit before getting those two outs. What followed was quite an epic meltdown

  7. Gerry Says:

A few HoFers on that list - Hal Newhouser, Burleigh Grimes, Mordecai Brown, Pete Alexander, not to mention Maddux, Glavine (3 times!), and Pettitte.

  8. Brett Says:

Quite a few HOFers on it when you look at it as well. Brown, Maddux, Newhouser, Pettitte, Alexander, Grimes. Maybe not Andy...

  9. Brett Says:

That was very scary Gerry... 🙂

Attempted blog hijack / non-stats comment alert:

At what point in a postseason game would you walk out on your home team? Discuss....

I was listening in the car radio to a 2-0 game, but shortly later flipped on the tube to find the Yankees trailing 7-0 and still not out of the 9th. Cameras showed fans streaming out of the park. I couldn't quite decide if I'd be going with them, if the Yanks were my team. It's definitely close to where I would bail -- it's late, it's cold, and what are the odds on a last-gasp 7-run rally?

But in any case, the wild pitch bringing home the 8th run would have sealed it for me.

So, what are your thoughts? What sort of deficit / weather / whatever conditions would send you home early from a home team postseason game?

  11. Fantusta Says:

It is impossible for me to fathom leaving a home game for anything short of a medical or family emergency.
I've sat through the Reds hitting 10 home runs against us in Veteran's Stadium, I've sat through more than a full extra game of extras, I can't imagine any reason to leave early.

  12. Volrath50 Says:

I really can't imagine leaving a game early under any non-emergency. I mean, I paid for nine innings, and I'm going to take them, win or lose.

Besides, just imagine how awesome it would be if your team actually DID come back from 8-0 in the bottom of the ninth. Is that a game you'd really wan't to say you walked out of?

  13. Gerry Says:

I was at this game: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN197305010.shtml

Giants down by 6, 2 out, 9th inning, runner on 1st. Quite glad I didn't leave!
