Ace Vs. Ace In Game 5 LDS

Posted by Steve Lombardi on October 11, 2010

David Price and Cliff Lee will face off in Game 5 of the 2010 ALDS series between the Rays and Rangers. Is this the best match-up of starting pitchers, ever, for a Game 5 in an LDS?

Here's the list of all starters in a Game 5 LDS game:

I know it was not a "true" LDS series, in the sense that it was post-1994, but that 1981 match-up between Steve Carlton and Steve Rogers was an impressive one, heading into that game, no?

  1. Dr. Doom Says:

10-11-1981 must have been a good day in baseball. TWO shutouts pitched in Ace vs. Ace games. Awesome.

  2. Derek Says:

I'll say Pedro vs. Zito is the best match up I see, followed by Mulder vs. Clemens. I'll put Price and Lee third. Has it really been five years since we've had a game 5? Wow...

  3. Djibouti Says:

If that Mussina-Colon match-up was 5 years earlier it would have been huge.

  4. Zack Says:

10-11-1981 was an interesting day in a completely screwed up year for baseball. I agree about Zito-Martinez being the best ace vs. ace, since most of the other match-ups there are ace vs. jack.

  5. Steve Lombardi Says:

That Matt Morris/Curt Schilling Game 5 in 2001 was a pretty good duel too.

  6. Dan Gilbert Says:

If you are picking which game ended up being the best display of 2 pitchers in a game 5 "aces duel", I am going to pick the Schilling/Morris matchup. 251 total pitches, 17 innings, 15K's and only 3 earned runs. The only real blemish on either line is the 3 BBS by Morris.

  7. TheGoof Says:

I agree, Derek. Moose-Colon's up there, too.

  8. Mack Says:

Steve Carlton and Steve Rogers in the 1981 NLDS is a pretty good matchup.

  9. John Autin Says:

On a tangent ... Looking ahead to the presumptive Halladay/Lincecum matchup in NLCS Game 1, does anyone know of a prior LCS or WS opener pitting a reigning Cy Young Award winner against the guy who would win it for the current year? (Not that Halladay is a lock for this year's CYA, but he's got to be the heavy favorite.)

  10. argman Says:

Without looking it up to be certain, I would say Dwight Gooden vs Mike Scott in 1986.

  11. John Autin Says:

    Nice work, Argman! (@10)

  12. barkfart Says:

very good data-collecting, steve. Just going up and down that list just gives you goosebumps. I watched A LOT of those games.

  13. DoubleDiamond Says:

Since I am also a big fan of oldies music from the late 1950s through the early 1980s, when I see the names Lee and Price together, usually the first thing that comes to my mind is "Stagger Lee" by Lloyd Price.

Even if the night is clear and the moon is yellow, will it be seen through that dome? (I should know, but I don't remember, if the Rays' stadium has a retractable roof.) And in the Tampa Bay area, I don't think the leaves will come tumbling down.
