Posted by Steve Lombardi on October 7, 2011
How many batters have gone hitless in a sudden death post-season game and had 3 or more strikeouts in that same contest?
Here is the list -

I hope Doc can pull a "Schilling" from the above list tonight!
Meaning he wins the game!!!
October 7th, 2011 at 1:23 pm
I spoke too soon.
Hopefully he pulls a "Saberhagen" instead!!!! 😉

Holy Wade Boggs batman!
I bet Boggs struck out 3 or more times in a game less than 10 times in his career.
October 7th, 2011 at 1:36 pm
Looks like Fisk couldn't replicate his magic from the game before.
October 7th, 2011 at 1:53 pm
The Lazzeri game was the one where hit a foul home run off Pete Alexander with the bases loaded. He then struck out for the third time.
October 7th, 2011 at 1:57 pm
@3
Boggs had 12 games with 3 strikeouts, none with more than 3.

Thanks for looking that up. I almost typed 15 times, but I wanted more emphasis on my point!

Cool -- I had never heard of Ernie Orsatti, who was a part-time OF with the Cards in '31.
That game 7 was his only WS appearance that year, and an interesting sequence occurred in his first AB.
In the 1st inning, Orsatti came up with 1 out, a run in, and men on 3rd and 1st. During the AB, Pepper Martin stole 2nd. Orsatti then struck out, but the strike was not held, and with 1B open, they had to throw to 1st for the out. On the play, George Watkins broke for home, and Jimmie Foxx's throw back went wild as the run scored. Watkins hit a 2-run HR in the 3rd, and the Cards went on to win, 4-2.

Some big names on this list.

Mike Schmidt was smart enough to convince his team to win the game he went 0-5 in. (To his credit, Alex did walk to start a "rally" in the 4th but didn't score when Russell Martin and Brett Gardner failed to come through.)
Anyway, that's a lot of Alex-bashing today for a guy who has carried his team in the postseason at times and who was half dead and probably shouldn't have played.

4 M V P's in the group....and a few Hall of Famers. The bashing A-Rod gets won't come close to the crap heeped on Ryan Howard if he and Phila fail tonight in a low-scoring game. Such is the woeful plight of the $25,000,000 ball-player.
@10 Todd:
Schmidt breaks Aaron's record on the juice....just a thought
October 7th, 2011 at 3:39 pm
Interestingly, their teams were 15-10 in these games.

No player since 1901 has ever had a .500 OBP without Slugging at least .600.
John McGraw and Billy Hamilton did it around the turn of the century, with McGraw last doing it in 1901m clearing the .500 OBP easily while not even clearing .500 SLG!
The closest to that (>500 OBP <600SLG) since then that I can think of are Wade Boggs in 1988 with .476/490, and Barry Bonds with .480/.565 in 2007.
That's my note on Boggs for the day.
Will we ever see another player reach base .500 without slugging .600?
October 7th, 2011 at 3:44 pm
wow fisk really blew it in that '75 series.
October 7th, 2011 at 3:46 pm
and amazing that damian miller managed a postive WPA
October 7th, 2011 at 3:49 pm
Also amazing that a team that had it's lineup start with Womack and Counsell won the World Series.

Paul, how do we know he wasn't on the juice and I doubt he adds another 200 HRs just from using steroids. They didn't help Randy Velarde break the record. 🙂

Interesting that David Justice is on this list of disappointing final-game performances, since two years before that performance, he became probably one of the very few to hit a home run in a 1-0 series clincher, for the 1995 Braves against his soon-to-be teammates in Cleveland.
October 7th, 2011 at 4:27 pm
(Just because I don't like leaving things unresearched...)
One of the three players to hit a home run in a 1-0 series clincher, Frank Robinson (1966 World Series) and Tony Fernandez (1997 ALCS) being the others.
October 7th, 2011 at 5:26 pm
The Reds got even with Fisk for that game 6 homer...
October 7th, 2011 at 9:14 pm
I'm going to add to my previous list. It doesn't seem fair to penalize hitters who happened to have runners on.
So, in addition Justice, Fernandez and Robinson ending series with homers in 1-0 games, let's add:
- Bill Dickey ending the 1943 World Series with a 2 run homer in a 2-0 game, and
-Daryl Strawberry ending the 1999 ALCS with a 3 run jack in a 3-0 game.

Ahhhh I hate A Rod and McGwire. Like this list.

What's the most career PA's by a batter that never struck out 3 times in a game?
October 8th, 2011 at 1:12 am
strikeouts could be productive if they drove up the pitcher's pitch count significantly and got him out of the game early. can we see some total pitch counts for these 3K+ batters' games? does a long at bat increase the leverage index or do anything good for the batter's stats even if it ends in a strikeout?

Shutouts by Reuss and Saberhagen.
Guess when you're in a groove, who wants to upset things by running the bases (or even running to first).

October 8th, 2011 at 10:47 am
@25
Vinnie: I ran my search for the regular season only. The last entry on your list occurred in the ALDS. It's kind of weird that five of Boggs' games came in 1990.

@23.
"What's the most career PA's by a batter that never struck out 3 times in a game?"
Is it Nellie Fox?
October 8th, 2011 at 3:46 pm
@29
In 8329 PA Joe Sewell never struck out more than twice in a game. I don't know if it's a record.
Sewell struck out twice in a game two times.
October 8th, 2011 at 4:04 pm
@29, @30
If I have used the P-I correctly Nelson Fox has 10349 PA without ever striking out more than twice in a game. I don't know if that is a record.
Fox struck out twice in a game 9 times.
October 9th, 2011 at 9:38 pm
Surprisingly, teams that had such a player went 15-10 in such games.
It is somewhat surprising, but (a) small sample, and (b) it's easier to strike out three times if you have more PA. 6 of the 25 guys above had 5 PA in the game, and most had 4, so apparently their teammates were hitting.
