What does that work out to...about 27% of the time? That's more than I thought it would be - how about you?

...And only the Yankees in 2001 came back to win. I'd say that the Twins and Rays have dug themselves a pretty deep hole.

What about the 2008 Cubs?

Bryan - they should be there. Maybe I cut them by mistake? Let me rerun the list later today. Thanks.

Teams that lost the first two games at home are 1-8 in the series with the potential fifth game at home. In other words, only one team out of 9 has managed to win two road games followed by one home game down 2-0. Teams are 0-6 when the potential fifth game would be on the road, excluding the LCS from 1969-1984 which I'll check shortly.

I don't know when the change first occurred, but the ALDS/NLDS used to be of the format 2 games away, then 3 games home - so some of these occurrences may have been the "lesser" team (i.e. Wild Card or division leader with worst record) starting out with 2 home games so it wouldn't have been as much of a surprise for them to lose them (still a surprise because they are playoff teams at least, but supposedly not as good as their opponent). Even though there are a variety of holes in that logic, since for many of the seasons, the Wild Card team has the 2nd best record in the league, but you get my point.
I would think they changed the format to 2 Home - 2 Away - 1 Home (for Home field advantage) because if home field holds true - then the team with the "advantage" would lose games 1 and 2 and be forced to win the last 3 at home (like the 1995 Mariners). So it would seem like a huge task even though it washes out as just the home team winning each game.

OK, upon further review, the 2 road - 3 home format (for home field advantage) was only used for 1981, & 1995-1997. They changed over to 2-2-1 format in 1998. Therefore, my comments above in #5 apply to only 6 out of the 17 occurrences.

I'm surprised that both home teams in the same LDS postseason losing both home games has happened before. The NLDS games of 1995 had the home teams both lose twice (Dodgers and Colorado). Wait a minute. Colorado was the wild card that year. How did they get home field?
October 8th, 2010 at 12:16 pm
@5 - nice research. I knew 95 was the biggest complaint of that, because the Indians had (seemingly) such a big homefield advantage that season. It figures that it took 2 years to change it. We're all still waiting to see when they will do-away with the wild-card team can't face the division winner from the same division. Which means they will ALWAYS face each other in the LCS if at all.
7, read 5. 🙂

FYI, post/chart now updated to include the Cubs.

how about LCSs that were best of five? that was the case until 1985. in those days it was 2-3.....

@ 8. Oh sorry. Somehow #5 must not have showed up before I posted my response.
October 8th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
Thanks Steve...as a Cubs fan I would rather forget that but I suppose it should be included 😉

@5
From what I understand, the change was made because under the old format, one team could never clinch at home.
