Personally, I prefer the Mariners approach of blindly crapwalking around the bases. It's obviously far less effective, but it is quite fun to watch AND has added some intrique to the Cy Young debate!

  2. John Autin Says:

Sean, well done. If I may tack on:

-- Despite their low BA, the Rays' .333 ranked 6th in the AL. The Royals' BA was 27 points higher, but their OBP was 2 points lower.
-- The Rays had just 92 GIDP, 18 fewer than any other AL team; the Twins led the majors with 159 GIDP. The Rays hit into a DP in 8.2% of GIDP opportunities, the Twins 13.1%. Carl Crawford and Carlos Pena each had just 2 GIDP out of 132 and 112 DP opportunities, respectively.
-- The Rays' rates of doubles and triples, as a percentage of hits, were well above average; I'm not sure if that's covered in your "taking the extra base" measures.
