Can Brett Myers Match Schilling’s 2002 Streak?

Posted by Steve Lombardi on September 21, 2010

Since 1996, how many starting pitchers had 15+ games in a row, to start a season, where they pitched at least 6 innings in each contest?

Note that Brett Myers has 31 such starts since the begining of this season - the best streak in baseball, since 1996, after the streak that Curt Schilling had in 2002.

Can Myers match Schillings mark? Probably not. But, it's been an incredible season for Myers this year, nonetheless.

  1. Eriq Jaffe Says:

Just as a side note, Buehrle's 21-game streak probably would have reached 32 games if he hadn't been ejected after 5.2 innings on 8/1/05. He had pitched 49 consecutive 6+ inning starts (dating back to 5/11/2004) before the ejection.

  2. Bob Hulsey Says:

I don't think there are enough starts left in the season to reach 35.

But, be honest, how many of you thought Ed Wade had made another huge mistake signing this guy for $3 million with an option for $8 million in 2011? He could arguably the best free agent signing of the past winter.

  3. Thomas Says:

It's conceivable that he could get 3 more starts... but I'd think it's not really that likely.

  4. Steve Lombardi Says:

That's what I was thinking - that the schedule/clock is working against him.

  5. John Autin Says:

On a related note, here's one that surprised me:

    -- Longest streak lasting at least 7 innings, 1990-present: 24, Darryl Kile, May 4-Sept. 2, 1997.

Clemens had a 20-game streak that same year. The longest one-season streak in this century is 16 by Chris Carpenter in 2005, his Cy Young Award season.

P.S. Off topic, here's another odd distinction for the late Darryl Kile: He is the only pitcher *ever* with 200+ IP, at least 1 strikeout per inning, and at least 1 hit per inning. In 1996, Kile had 219 IP, 219 Ks and 233 hits allowed. His BABIP was .352 that year, .266 the next, representing the main reason he went 12-11, 4.19 in '96 and 19-7, 2.57 in '97. (Or so I think.)

  6. KenH Says:

    No Maddux? Astounding!

  7. BSK Says:

Did he skip any starts? Or did the schedule just not work out in his favor?

  8. DavidJ Says:

Not only has Myers gone 6+ innings every time out, he's allowed more than four runs in a game only once. That's a phenomenally consistent season, one that's gone under the radar in this supposed "Year of the Pitcher."

  9. eorns Says:

And yet in his 31 starts he's pitched in the ninth inning just once all year, and only 4 times in the eighth (maybe that's why he also has 11 no-decisions?). He's only 7th in innings pitched, averaging under 7 innings per start (6.84). He's got 9 starts of exactly 6 innings. Why was he taken out of 6 starts in which he gave up 3 or fewer runs but threw under 100 pitches? He has 3 120+ pitch starts, too. Very interesting season...kind of like getting 35 hits in a 31-game hitting streak.

#9: "Why was he taken out of 6 starts in which he gave up 3 or fewer runs but threw under 100 pitches?"

I would guess that in most of those cases he was removed for a pinch hitter.

  11. Richard Says:

    @ 10
Indeed. The Astros blow, so more than likely it's either A) they really needed runs or B) they weren't scoring anyway and there was no point in extending him

  12. Richard Says:

Also, he was hurt last year

  13. Dan Franzen Says:

He's been great, and I sort of wish the Phils still had him (only sort of, for obvious reasons), but the truth is that he's a 6-inning pitcher. That's good, not awesome. He's just been consistent in getting through six. That makes him a solid #3 starter in my book.

  14. Noodle Says:

1997 Andy Pettite and David Cone - on the same team at the same time....talk about not taxing your bullpen

  15. Neil L Says:

Steve, just curious... was there any significance to starting the seasons at 1996? Was it to limit the number of matches?

Arguably, the most interesting aspect of the study is how many matches there are in the last 14 years.

Why would Arizona have 4 of the top 12 pitchers on the list?
