Catching Continuum

Posted by Steve Lombardi on August 2, 2010

Thurman Munson and Humberto Quintero have something in common besides being major league catchers. Do you know what it is?

Hint: It's today.

    Birthday?!

  2. Dillon Says:

Today, Thurman Munson died and Humberto Quintero was born

  3. Dillon Says:

It was on the same day in 1979

  4. Steve Lombardi Says:

Yes, that is correct. 8/2/79 was the date of Munson's passing and the date of Quintero birth - 31 years ago today.

Very sad day for me. I was 10 and lost my favorite player.

Tmckelv - I'm a little older than you. But, I remember it like it was yesterday.

I had just finished my afternoon paper route. I was in my bedroom – resting on my bed. I was listening to Paco on WKTU on the stereo. They interrupted with the news flash. I jumped off my bed and ran downstairs to the living room. My dad was watching Channel 7 – and they broke in with the story too.

The next few days are a blur for me. I was a zombie. I never felt worse in my whole life – which was less than 17 years long at that time.

    Thats eerie!

back before ESPN and whatnot, my cable company had 4 channels dedicated to printed news. They just simply scrolled headlines one page at a time on dedicated channels I was watching the sports text channel, read one story and then saw NEW YORK YANKEE CATCHER THURMAN and then there was a page break. I thought to myself, "player of the week" as that was the type of story you would often see, and then when the page scrolled I saw MUNSON WAS KILLED and I let out a shriek.

I was a Tiger fan, so while I respected Munson, he was a dreaded Yankee. I was still young enough that I hadn't experienced that much death and was literally shaking the rest of the day.

I remember seeing something about Mike Jorgensen, a player in the 1970s whose career started in the late 1960s and may have stretched into the early 1980s, possibly on one of his baseball cards, that he was born on the same day that Babe Ruth died, August 16, 1948.

You can probably connect other players this way.

And not just births with deaths but births with famous baseball events. I also remember something about Dave Winfield that may have been on one of his baseball cards, that he was born on the same day as Bobby Thomson's "shot heard 'round the world".
