Dustin Pedroia’s winning hand: Three Jacks

Posted by Andy on June 25, 2010

Last night, Dustin Pedroia jacked 3 home runs to help the Red Sox beat the Rockies despite a second consecutive blown save by Jonathan Papalbon. Let's take a look inside Pedroia's night.

Pedroia had 5 hits in all, adding a single and a double to go along with the 3 HR.

He's the 12th guy to have 5 hits in a game this year and the first with multiple homers:

Note how high Pedroia's WPA was for the game--obviously belting three homers, including one in extra innings, helps your team's chances of winning quite significantly. Schierholtz was the only guy to get 5 hits in a loss. McCuthchen and Jones had their 5-hit games in the very same game.

Here are the last 20 guys to have at least 3 homers in a game with at least 5 hits:

This is quite an interesting group. Names that stick out immediately for me:

  • Fred Lynn's performance came as part of his MVP & ROY 1975 season
  • Ellis Burks' team lost the game
  • So did Mickey Brantley's. Wait...Mickey Brantley? Mickey Brantley?
  • Davey Lopes?

Now chcek out the list of second basemen within the PI box score years to hit 3 HR in a game (whether they had 5 hits or not):

Wow, this list contains mor surprises than not. Chase Utley? Nope. Jeff Kent? Nope. Joe Morgan? Nope. But we do have an Ortiz, just not that one. Which guy is more surprising--Treadway, Blauser, or Sveum? Or Lansing?

Weird.

  1. Marc Says:

    Treadway had 28 CAREER HR's...
LANSING hit 20 as a ROCKIE in 1997 alone...and he hit for the cycle in 2000.3

  2. David Says:

I know they won in a rout, but I was surprised to see that Shawn Green setting the single-game total bases record had a WPA of only .303. Interesting. I would have thought it would be much higher.

  3. Kahuna Tuna Says:

Two more three-HR games by second basemen in seasons not covered by the Play Index: Bobby Doerr of the Red Sox, June 8, 1950, in a 29-4 win over the Browns; and Bobby Avila of the Indians, June 20, 1951, in a 14-8 win over the Red Sox. Both games took place at Fenway Park.

  4. Ryan Says:

6 of the last 9 with 3 homers and 5 hits in a game played for the Red Sox at one point in their career.

  5. DoubleDiamond Says:

I remember Treadway's game. It was the night that the Phillies honored Mike Schmidt, about a year after his retirement.
