Standridge Stands Alone

Posted by Steve Lombardi on June 16, 2008

Seeing the Yankees' Worm Killer Wang recently lose most of his 2008 season to an injury running the bases in an N.L. park got me wondering...How many A.L. pitchers, since inter-league started, have been "caught stealing" while his team played in an N.L. park? Thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Batting Game Finder, it's easy to find the answer. When I set the controls for "From 1997 to 2008, Playing in the AL, Against the NL, Played: P, (requiring CS>=1), sorted by greatest number of games matching selected criteria in a game" this is what I found:

                   Games Link to Individual Games
+-----------------+-----+-------------------------+
 Jason Standridge 1 Ind. Games

Games found: 1.

Just one pitcher: Jason Standridge - back on June 21, 2003.

I wonder if that's a record that will stand for a long time now?

Also interesting is that pitchers have actually been successful four times during interleague play - three of them American Leaguers. What's really odd: All four pitcher steals took place over the course of a year and 8 days, and it hasn't happened in six years.

Unforunately if you look at the play by play you'll see that it was simply a hit and run that j.lugo struck out on.

and did anyone take a look at the pitchers who have a steal list? Darren Dreifort stole home!!!!

Only tangentially related, but didn't Maddux have a stolen base last year or the year before where he went when the pitcher was just scuffling around on the mound? And there wasn't even a throw to contest it?

It's even more interesting that it came on Standridge's only major league plate appearance. Standridge's spot in the lineup was due to come up in the 6th inning, but the game was suspended by rain.

I used the PI season finder to see how many AL pitchers had a CS in all games since 1973.

It was done 4 times by 3 players.

Blue Moon Odom (OAK) had 2 CS in 1973. He was used 21 times as a PR that year.

In 1976 Rick Waits (CLE) was used 10 times as a PR and had 1 CS.

The other of course was Jason Standridge.
