Historical Transactions Occurring on June 15 - Baseball-Reference.com

I'm back from vacation (drove all over Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota for two weeks), and back at the grind. Above is a link to a fun little frivolity that I just added to the site. It shows all of the transactions on a particular day. The list can get quite long for some dates (draft dates or the trading deadline), so prepare to be overwhelmed.

I can see a lot of use can be made of these data. Thank you.

    By the way, welcome home.

And indeed, June 15 was once a trading deadline. I remember Charlie O. Finley trying to unload a few members of the 1972-1974 Oakland championship teams on that date one year in the mid-1970s. One or more of these deals was/were voided by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn.

    Here they are:

    June 15, 1976
The New York Yankees purchased Vida Blue from the Oakland Athletics.

The Boston Red Sox purchased Rollie Fingers from the Oakland Athletics.

The Boston Red Sox purchased Joe Rudi from the Oakland Athletics.

    June 18, 1976
Previous purchase of Vida Blue by the New York Yankees from the Oakland Athletics voided and player returned.

Previous purchase of Rollie Fingers by the Boston Red Sox from the Oakland Athletics voided and player returned.

Previous purchase of Joe Rudi by the Boston Red Sox from the Oakland Athletics voided and player returned.

    ******

As for your trip, it sounds like you could have been storm chasing. Or maybe trying to take in some minor league baseball (plus maybe a visit to the new Target Field).

New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, p. 583:

“For many years baseball’s trading deadline was June 15. This could be called the ‘Joe Dugan Rule.’ On July 23, 1922, with the St. Louis Browns in first place, the Yankees gave $50,000 and a package of players to the also-ran Red Sox for Joe Dugan. This upset the St. Louis sports fans some, and then, on July 30, the exact same thing happened in the National League. With the Cardinals also fighting for the pennant, the New York team (the Giants) gave $100,000 and a couple of pitchers to Boston (the Braves) for veteran pitcher Hugh McQuillan [who won six games during the Giants’ stretch drive].

“Cardinal GM Branch Rickey seized on the bilateral anger of the St. Louis fans, and orchestrated a campaign to get St. Louis city organizations to protest these kinds of deals. The City Council, the Rotary Club, and other civic organizations filed protests with Commissioner Landis, complaining that their teams could not hope to compete if the New York teams were allowed to buy off the competition in the heat of the pennant race. Landis agreed, and prohibited” trades after June 15 unless the traded players had passed through waivers.

According to a Nov. 19, 2004 article on MLB’s Web site, the June 15 deadline was moved to July 31 in 1985.
