Marathon Men

Posted by Raphy on April 18, 2008

In honor of last night's marathon , here are the players who had 9 PA in 4 different games in their careers (since 1956).

 Dave Winfield 4 Ind. Games
 Reggie Smith 4 Ind. Games
 Ozzie Smith 4 Ind. Games
 Gene Richards 4 Ind. Games
 Don Mincher 4 Ind. Games
 Willie Mays 4 Ind. Games
 Chuck Knoblauch 4 Ind. Games
 Bert Campaneris 4 Ind. Games

Winfield, Ozzie and especially Gene Richards benefited by playing on the 1980 Padres (who had 3 games of 17+ innings), but there are other interesting games here as well.

Two quick notes:

None of the players won or lost all 4 games .

Reggie Smith had theĀ  fewest hits in those games, Bert Campaneris the most.

    Notes:
    1. In a 1977 game, Dave Winfield had 11 putouts in right field.

    2. In a 1967 game, Reggie Smith was the 2nd baseman for the Red Sox, one of only 6 career games at that position.

    3. In September 1974, while in a pennant race, the Cardinals had a 25 inning game against the Mets on the 11th and a 17 inning game agains the Phils on the 13th. Then on the 17th, they "only" played 13 against the Pirates. Reggie had 2 intentional walks in the 1st 2 games and 1 against the Pirates. All of the walks could explain why Reggie had the fewest hits of the "Marathon Men." The Cardinals won all three games on the road.

    4. Ozzie Smith's 1988 game featured Jose Oquendo pitching 4 innings and Jose DeLeon playing OF 4 innings.

    5. Don Mincher had a tough time in those games. He had 2 0-9's and a 1-9. In the other game he went 4-9.

    6. In 1970 Willie Mays was 4-6 in a 15 inning game the Padres won 17-16. All 7 Giant pitchers gave up runs.

    7. On June 4, 1971, Marathon Men Don Mincher and Bert Campaneris were on opposite teams.

You want a marathon man? Ed Sudol was the home plate umpire for the Mets' 23-inning loss to the Giants in 1964 AND the Mets' 24-inning loss to the Astros in 1968 AND the Mets' 25-inning loss to the Cardinals in 1974!!
