1984 Awards Voting - Baseball-Reference.com

I've added a WAR column to the MVP, Cy Young and RoY tables for our awards voting summaries.  Let the voter second guessing begin.

    Thanks Sean & Sean.

Zoilo Versalles thanks you both as well. Maybe his MVP will get more respect now that its WAR-certified. 🙂

  2. Johnny Twisto Says:

Have any players with negative WAR ever gotten a vote? I hope so.

It used to happen fairly often; less so in recent years. Players with negative WAR receiving at least one MVP vote:

1911: George Gibson, Jimmy Walsh, Johnny Kling
    1912: Joe Birmingham
1913: Heinie Wagner, Mickey Doolan, Armando Marsans
    1922: Bill Wambsganss, George Cutshaw
    1924: Wally Gerber, Chick Galloway
    1925: Benny Bengough
1926: Oscar Melillo, Phil Todt, Wally Gerber
1927: Bobby Reeves, Bill Regan, Jack Rothrock, Phil Todt
    1928: Fresco Thompson
    1932: Rabbit Maranville
1933: Rabbit Maranville, Jim Levey, Marty McManus
    1936: Eric McNair
    1938: Pete Fox, Leo Durocher
    1939: Myril Hoag
    1940: Dick Bartell, Bob Kennedy
    1941: Elden Auker
    1942: Rick Ferrell
    1943: Dick Siebert
    1944: George Kell
    1945: Roy Schalk, Al Lopez
    1947: Mark Christman
1950: Ken Wood, Sam Dente, Dave Philley
    1952: Billy Cox
    1955: Jose Valdivielso
    1956: Johnny Kucks, Bob Buhl
    1957: Del Ennis
    1961: Bobby Richardson
    1962: Ed Roebuck
    1965: Bobby Richardson
    1966: Jack Sanford, Glenn Beckert
    1967: Elston Howard
    1969: Ernie Banks
    1974: Jack Billingham
    1980: Tony Perez
    1989: Mookie Wilson
    1990: Joe Carter, Pedro Guerrero
    1992: George Bell
    1997: Deivi Cruz, Tony Womack
    2005: Jorge Cantu

The lowest WAR number I recall seeing was -2.0 (Sam Dente, 1950).

I'm glad to see that in 2008, no fewer than 7 players had higher WAR values in the AL than Dustin Pedroia.

  5. Johnny Twisto Says:

Wow Tuna, how did you do that search? I should have remembered that Elston Howard '67 vote, always found that very bizarre. I think Sean Smith would admit that his defensive system is pretty rough when it comes to pre-Retrosheet years, so that could partially account for a lot of those.

Josh, most of those players ahead of Pedroia in '08 are well within the margin of error, especially considering that WAR is not context-dependent (I think), so doesn't account for hitting with RISP, performance in a pennant race, etc. Only Mauer blew him away. When I did my own (unrefined) analysis, I had them much closer and thought Pedroia was very legit choice -- and I hate the Sox.

  6. Austyn Says:

So i was looking at the AL Rookie of the Year since 1990, and so far in 1990 Scott Radinsky finished 9th with a WAR of -0.5, in 1994 Chris Gomez had a WAR of -0.7 and finished 4th, in 1995 Ray Durham had WAR of -0.9 and finished 6th, in 1996 Tony Clark had a WAR of -0.4 and finished 3rd, in 1997 Deivi Cruz had a WAR of -0.6 and finished 4th, in 2001 Alfonso Soriano had a WAR of -0.5 and finished 3rd, in 2007 Delmon Young had a WAR of -1.1 and finished 2nd

  7. Austyn Says:

So i was bored and still interested in looking at now all RoY winners since i figured these guys would be the most likely to be replaced. I was looking either the lowest number to win, or possibly see if any negative values won and i found the lowest WAR to win the AL RoY was -0.1 in 1971 by Chris Chambliss of the Indians and -1.2 for the NL in 1962 by Ken Hubbs of the Cubs.
