1-pitch starts

Posted by Andy on March 25, 2008

First of all, note that boxscores on B-R.com now go back to 1956 (instead of 1957) thanks to some hard work by Sean and his team.

And now, here are all the game starts that last just 1 pitch:

We talked about that Astacio game recently, and Don Cardwell's name might be familiar to you because he passed away about 2 months ago. It's amazing to me that half these pitchers actually recorded an out. (It looks like 2 of them were involved in the defensive play, probably getting injured in the process.)

It looks like all but Bosio were involved in the play. Astacio was hit. In Cardwell's game it says that Wills singled to pitcher. That could either be a bunt or a shot up the middle where Cardwell was hurt. In Leiter's game, it says that Lansford singled to pitcher and Leiter threw wide of first, so he was probably hit since I can't imagine Carney laying down a bunt. The others were involved either with an assist or putout covering first.

In Bosio's game, Joey Cora hit a grounder to second. I suppose Bosio could have been hurt covering first if the ball was in the hole, but the 1B recorded the putout. He'd been off for 3 weeks, so I'm going to think he either stiffened up or he was afraid to face Ellis Burks and Frank Thomas coming up.

Andinator, just a quick question: When are you going to give the in-season gamelogs for each team? Because the first game was today (which you probably know). Just curious, thanks.

  3. Andy Says:

Uh, when you say "Andinator", are you talking to me?

As for your question, I have no idea. I'm a guest contributor to this blog but I don't have anything to do with the running of the site. You need to ask Sean about that.

Yes, I am talking to you. And thanks.
