From May 22, 1995 through May 16, 2010, Mariano Rivera has pitched in 930 regular season games. That's 15 years of pitching - well, actually, it's just about 6 days short of being a full 15 years...but, it's close enough.

How many times in those 15 years has Rivera recorded just two outs or less in a regular season game while allowing 2 earned runs or more? Thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Pitching Game Finder, here's the answer:

    These 16 games, which represent less than 2% of all Rivera's career games pitched, account for more than one sixth of all the earned runs he has ever allowed (46 of 275) and almost 15% of all the home runs he has given up (9 of 61). Also three of the 13 triples he has allowed.

    If you took these 16 games out of Mariano's record, his career WHIP would be 0.9676, which would place him microscopically ahead of Addie Joss (0.9678) for lowest career WHIP.

    Not that we all couldn't benefit from having all our failures removed from the record . . . but it shows in yet another way just how good Rivera has been.

    Nolan Ryan threw 7 no-hitters in 28 years.
    That's 1 no-hitter every 4 years (or 1 every 120 starts)

    While we all could benefit from having our failures removed, few would benefit from having a mere 16 games removed. YIKES!
