Consecutive Saves at Home
Posted by Raphy on May 16, 2010
With Mariano Rivera blowing a save at home today for the first time in ages, there was some discussion in the comments from Andy's thread about the longest home save streaks. Now that Mariano is done, the longest active streak belongs to Fernando Rodney with 27. Here are the longest such streaks as listed by the PI.

Willie Hernandez and Randy Myers's streaks (i.e., the ones from the '80s) are probably the most impressive, with well over 1 IP per appearance.
I can't believe Rivera was tied with Gagne, I had no idea. Now today's loss stings even more. Oh well.
Rivera, Francisco Cordero, Joe Nathan, and Trevor Hoffman each have two streaks on the list. Rivera's two streaks are separated by 13 days. Looks like there was just one blown save in the middle, and Rivera still ended up with the win, so the Yanks had won 83 straight games when handing Rivera a save situation at home before today.

Wow Johnny, good catch. Sunday was the first time in over 5 years that the Yankees handed the ball to Mariano Rivera in a save situation at home and lost. Overall, it was the 12th time in his career.

I knew Gagne had to up there. He had that 81 save streak at one point. I think it was 81...close to it anyway.

Interesting that Wickman, Rivera and Cordero all lost their streak on pretty much the same say in August of 2007.

I didn't even think to look at what happened prior to Rivera's 05-07 streak. He blew another save which the Yankees won just prior to that streak. I think I counted another 14 successful saves before that, so it was 98 consecutive wins at home when Rivera came in for a save, back to that 4/6/05 appearance listed in Raphy's #2 (which helped lead to Rivera's mock-standing O at Fenway a few days later).

Not shown on Raphy's list in #2 is a 4/8/97 game at Anaheim in which Rivera gave a game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth. The Angels won that game in twelve innings. In fact, Rivera blew three of his first seven save opportunities in 1997, the year he officially took over the Yankees closer role. So he wasn't automatic right from the beginning.

I think that a most consecutive saves streak on the road would be even more impressive. Not only would someone be in enemy territory, but the stakes are higher - a go-ahead run is a walk-off, not just something for the pitcher's team to think about overcoming in the bottom of the ninth (although often against the opponent's closer). While a home game never presents a save opportunity in an extra inning game, a closer called in to preserve a lead in the bottom of an extra inning is not only trying to prevent a walk-off win but also to prevent the game from going into even more innings.
